Quitting Smoking

I can't figure out how to look past the first page of my post history on my tablet or I'd page the posters that talked about struggling with this.

Today marks two weeks sice the last time I smoked. I'm pretty ashamed, but I had 5 cigarettes in the 3 days after my BFP. I've smoked a pack a day for almost 10 years, so this is a big deal.

I've had my weight in sour candy because it's the only thing that will distract me. I've had to take a few walks at work to keep from having a meltdown. I have to convince myself every morning that I am a non-smoker...and sometimes multiple times throughout the day.

If there are posters out there suddenly having to quit cold turkey, it is possible. It's not easy but you will survive. The first week I just stayed angry. Furious. My inner monologue sounded like a tourette's outburst. At least I'm over that!

I would love to do a check-in with those who are/have quit smoking. If you need a litle encouragement from someone who has been there, message me.

Re: Quitting Smoking

  • I quit smoking and it has been 8 years.  It is one of the hardest things I have ever done, but so well worth it.

good job.  I had to tell myself, if I smoked again I started from the drawing board again.

This helps- it really does. Write it down, say it out loud. Worry about getting through today, this hour, then next minute if that is what it takes.

Yes. That focus made the days shorter. I have a friend at work that would offer me a smoke (uwittingly, out of kindness), so I would focus on making it home where there was no opportunity to cheat.

  • Good for you!! I quit 3 years ago. It was hard but so worth it!  Is it ok for me to post the website I used here?  It was great support and very active.

Another thing I did is when I got a craving I looked up blogs from people that had lung cancer.....THAT STOPPED ANY CRAVING!!

also keep low calorie snack and COLD water or tea handy.

hey now!  worthless?  I get that it's shitty and leads to birth defects and withdrawal after labour and delivery--but loathe??  People are human and not everyone can quit cold turkey.  Especially someone who has smoked a pack a day for the last ten years.

    Compassion much?

I quit cold turkey, but I was fortunate because I had one puff before knowing I was pregnant and it tasted disgusting.  If it makes you feel any better about your 5 cigs in three days--my friend was a smoker pack a day for ten years--same deal--and her doctors told her she could have 1 to 3 a day without doing too much damage.  She did that though out her whole pregnancy and her baby is normal sized and fine.

I'm not saying don't quit--QUIT--it'll make everything feel good for you and your baby, but don't beat yourself up too horribly about those five cigs.

think of the mothers in the 20's and 30's who didn't know any better--we all got here somehow.

A doctor that would say this should have his license pulled.  Really?  "much damage"?  What is "much damage"?  I agree with the PP that I have no compassion for people who smoke during pregnancy.  Why?  Well really for several reasons.  First by now most people knew before they even started that smoking is extremely bad for you.  Second, they are hurting a child by their CHOICE to continue smoking.  Also those who smoke during pregnancy are going to smoke after the child is born--now the child gets to deal with lung infections, ear infections, problems with immunity, etc.

OP--Good luck!  YOU CAN DO THIS!!  Just remember that you are having a baby that you are going to love forever and will love you forever and this choice that you are making is just one of several that shows just how much you love him/her.

Finally, I hate the arguments that--my mom did it and I'm okay.  Please don't use those, they sound ridiculous.

  • Unpossible--the shock to the fetus (and really this is up for debate because different studies suggest different things).  However, that being said, the "shock" is really from the decrease in nicotine.  So...instead of smoking which puts toxins into the bloodstream and into the baby, the OP can choose a nicotine gum etc...obviously quickly lowering the dosage everyday.

Agreed about the people smoking which TTC--it pisses me off.  It also pisses me off to see pregnant women smoking....regardless of the one baby who turns out "fine" there are thousands more that don't.

  • It is really hard I smoked for almost 8 years with the exception of my last pregnancy with my Daughter, I  am 7 weeks now and I have not had a Smoke into its an every day struggle but I am doing it because I know it is the best thing for my baby I just have to keep reminding my self that and it seems to work
  • When I got pregnant with my first, I was a pretty heavy smoker. We weren't TTC, so it was a surprise bfp. That said, my OB told me not to quit cold turkey, but that by the next time he saw me, he wanted me done with smoking. I gradually cut down over a weeks' time, and was able to just stop at that point.
When I went back to work when D'S was 8 months old, I started smoking again, unfortunately. However, I quit cold turkey within a few weeks of getting my IUD taken out in June.

    Always in my heart: BFP 9/6/12 - M/C 9/25/12
  • Hello there!

I recently quit smoking too.  I always told myself that the time that I felt pregnant or found out I was pregnant I was done.  That was part of my mindset.  There were no other options.

What helped me with this cold turkey quit was researching the impact it has on my unborn child.  I quit before I conceived, but by just barely a week are two.  Subconscious helped me out on that one that's for sure!  I put pop-up reminders in my phone with facts about huge impact it has on my health and my future babies health.  The fact that it increases SIDS by 35%.  Each reminder came up at a different time, and those times were when I would smoke.  On my morning drive to work, on my 10 minute break at work, on my lunch break, the drive home, after supper, before bed.  It checks you and makes you really put your mind back where it belongs.

Hang in there.  It's hard, but I know that you can do it!

  • The last cig I smoked was 8/24/12  The day I got my BFP.  I am 37 years old and have been smoking at least a pack a day for 15 yrs.  The first 2 weeks were very difficult.  What got me through the rough patches was telling myself that my little girl is counting on me to protect her in all ways.  I am an older FTM so I already had that stacked against me, I didn't need to add to the possible problems she could face due to my age.

Congrats on quitting.  and don't get discouraged if you do slip and hace one.  Just learn from it and try to do better the next time the urge hits.

Ps  a down side of quitting.  I gained 25 lbs in 20 weeks, my dr is not happy about the weight but I dont care  My little girl will thank me later.  You can always lose the weight but you can not fix the damage done by smoking.
