Anyone ever give LO a pomogranate or eat one yourself?

I've never had one so I bought one the other day when they were on sale. I looked online and it said to soak it before cutting open.  So 20 minutes later I have a bowl full of red seeds.  The website said I could eat the fleshy white part too, but that didn't taste so good.  Kind of like cardboard, lol.  Now what?  Any ideas what I can do with these seeds?  The outsides of the seeds are tasty, but there's a hard part in the middle of them, so I'm pretty sure my kids won't eat them as is, if at all.  Any ideas?  Trying to figure out what the hype is about this fruit.

  • I don't soak them but I do open them up then put them in water to get all the seeds out - the pulp/white part rises to the top and the seeds sink to the bottom. I just eat them as-is as a snack and I think they are great! They are good tossed on salads too. My husband thinks you have to spit out the seeds in the middle, but I just eat them and I think they are delicious!

  • You just eats the seeds. Throw away the white pulp. The seeds are delicious little bursts of juice (yes, with a seed in the middle, like a seeded grape so not sure how much kids will like them).  I sprinkle them on salads or in plain greek yogurt.  The juice stains REALLY easy, so that's one of the reason why they recommend you soak/peel them in a big bowl of water.  It makes it much easier to separate the seeds from the pith.  Pomegranate is a high anti-oxident fruit, I think that's why there's a lot of hype.

  • I've eaten one, but never gave one to LO since it's the seeds you eat. The outside of the seed is what you're supposed to eat.

  • The seeds go great on a spinach and goat cheese salad - very festive!

  • DH and I split one with DS1 almost every day.  He absolutely loves them and it's one of the only foods that he won't throw on the floor.

  • Ohhh, thanks!  Can I refrigerate the seeds for later?  If so, should I keep them in the bowl of water, or can they be kept in a bowl by themselves?

You can keep them in a bowl/bag for later without any water.

I love pomegranates, I should try giving them to the little guy.  I think he's only had them on salads or dried, so I don't know what he'd think of them fresh.  I bet he'd love them since he loved currants.

  • My daughter LOVES pomegranate seeds, hard part and all.

They're tasty, so we usually just eat them as a snack.  They're also good on salads, cereal/granola, yogurt, and in smoothies.

Oh yeah, and they are GREAT in these double chocolate cookies:  https://www.danamadeit.com/2011/11/recipe-double-dark-chocolate-pomegranate-cookies.html

  • DS just eats the seed part too. He loves them plain as a snack. Just let them try it. You never know what they will end up liking.
