Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Not stopping formula right at 12 months?

Is anyone elses little one not eating enough solids yet that they dont plan on cutting out formula right at 12 months? My girls were born 2 months early so I feel like I'm going to give it until 14 months to completely be off....but hopefully sooner if I can get them to start eating solids aside from purees and puffs.

Re: Not stopping formula right at 12 months?

  • There is no way I am going to just cut DS off at 12 months. He is almost 11 months and doesn't eat very much (solids). He won't let me feed him so I just give him finger foods and he picks at them. He is still breastfed, and I was planning on just feeding him in the morning at night for a few more months, but at this rate I will probably partially ween and do formula during the day until he starts eating more solids. I haven't asked my DR about it yet though.

  • My LO has cut himself off himself, it's been crazy! He only wants solids until bedtime bottle. But I sure wouldn't rush it if he didn't want it.

  • I BF and will return to work when LO is 12mths. I plan for her to have cows milk while at daycare, and I'll still BF morning and night.

My understanding is that BM or formula is recommended to 2 years.

  • we probably won't stop formula at 12 months. DS wants nothing to do with purees and he does he eat pieces of whatever we eat but its not enough and its not 3x a day so we will stick with formula until he's eating more consistently. we talked to his pedi and he was fine with it. he said not to rush food and he'll do it as he's ready. He said formula past one is fine. we can start to add in WCM but we don't have to cut formula.

  • Thank you ladies,

This makes me feel MUCH better! I am really going to push more finger foods come 12 months and hope that they catch on...but until they do I dont feel comfortable lessoning the amount of Formula they get. I'm glad i'm not alone in this.

  • I'm having to hold off on solids so that we get to 12 months with formula/wcm!  Right now we are doing a 60/40 formula/wcm and I'm planning on having her onto full wcm by new years.  If she didn't want solids so much I wouldn't be weaning her the way I am!

  • I see your reasoning OP.  It makes sense if your kiddos aren't eating enough solids.  I'll start weaning to whole milk around 11 months.  DS will get formula but also whole milk then I'll drop the formula altogether.  He eats a lot though.  He's been on table food since 6 months and currently eats more than his sister it seems like.

  • I say, however you can get food into them ... If they have an adjusted age, they may not be ready to stop FF at 12 months. I don't want to FF after 12 months because its a pain to be a slave to that FF, its cheaper to feed them food I can make, and quite frankly, my kid wants to eat whatever we are eating now. She gets very upset when we eat in front of her, and if its something I think she can manage without teeth, I will give her a little bit. DD1 wanted solids at 4 months, and DD2 was almost 7 months before she showed real interest. When you eat in front of them, do they get interested, follow the food, get upset or angry they aren't eating? That is a sign that they are really ready to start eating. But even eating doesn't mean they shouldn't get milk in some form. Since your babies are preemies, you may want to check with your pediatrician to make sure you aren't starting them on something they aren't physically ready to start. I have my baby book the doctor wrote in each visit, and he stopped me on formula at TWO MONTHS!!! And started me on soft boiled eggs. How conventional wisdom has changed since then. You will probably know when your kids are ready, and if you think they are, there is no harm in waiting a few weeks extra to make sure. I can't do that because DD2 gives me the stink eye and throws things if I don't share :)

  • My plan is to stop FF at 18months or later. DD is small and we feel that she will benefit more from having formula than whole milk. She is eating three solid meals a day, but her appetite is like mine.. Cannot eat large amounts in one sitting so hopefully formula will help her pack on the pounds!

This makes me feel better. I dont think we'll go until 18 months because our girls are growing fine but definitely wont go until they are eating more of what we eat and I know they are getting the nutrition they need.

  • Rowan pretty much refuses purees,at least ones that she doesn't see us eating regularly (she'll eat mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, hummus, etc) but still only has her two lower teeth in, so she doesn't eat much table food at all, certainly not enough to sustain her. We're only at 10 months now, and we imagine she'll pick up quickly once she has more teeth in, but I doubt she will be completely weaned off of formula by the time she's 12 months.
