DS threw up for the first time

DS threw up for the first time tonight.  He'd be acting kind of fussy and I just thought he was tired and then out of no where he just vomited all over the place.  We gave DS a bath to clean him up and then gave him a bottle and put him to bed.  He doesn't have a fever and so far he's still sleeping with no problem.  This is my first time dealing with a sick baby.  Does anyone have any tips?  For caring and/or keeping things clean?  If DS throws up again, is pedialyte appropriate so he doesn't get dehydrated? TIA!

Re: DS threw up for the first time

  • Last week, DS had the stomach flu and was throwing up at night. We put a beach towel over his sheet in his crib, and tucked it into the sides. We figured this out after changing sheets twice in an hour. It was a total lifesaver because we could just pull the towel off and put a new one on without taking the whole stupid mattress out of the crib and putting on those ridiculously tight sheets.

Also, you will want to give pedialyte in small doses. .I forget exactly, but like 2 oz every hour until they can handle more. I would just do that now to help rehydrate him.

Watch for dehydration (count diapers), and if it continues for more than like 8 hours I would call the Dr.

  • The general guidelines I was given was that if they've been vomiting for more than 6 hours or if they are vomiting and have diarrheoa as well to get them checked out.

The main issue, is of course dehydration. Extra drinks is good, and pedialyte can be good too, although some won't drink it. My girls LOVE it.

Keep an eye on wet nappies.

Mostly it's a hassle and you can end up with a lot of extra laundry. We had the vomiting and diarrheoa over the weekend. Ugh. Hope no one else in your family gets struck down.

Oh and the towel idea the pp suggested is absolutely the best thing you can do to make life easier at 2am.

  • Our daughter has had this type of sickness happen twice! Our pedi said to feed her smaller amounts more frequently, we usually did 4oz feedings and had to go down to half oz, and if she could keep that down for 15 mins then we could give her another half oz. However if she couldnt keep that down then we had to do pedialyte. We used to do a couple ozs at a time. We had to do this for several days.

Oh and everytime we fed her we would keep a towel over her. Make sure to tip him forward while he is throwing up and keep him up for 30 minutes before laying him down after his feedings.

    Hope he feels better.
