Bumper in the Crib

I'm doing it.

Re: Bumper in the Crib

  • I had one on 3 sides last time. This time I am not, but this is only because all I bought was a sheet ... no fancy bed set this time around. Waste of money.

  • I used one with DS (whole on the head side, half way on the sides), a friend of my mom is making a new one for this LO so I'll probably use it again

Once they can roll back and forward there's really no risk

  • I'm definitely skipping the bumper. I don't want to put anything extra in the crib with the baby, plus I don't even love how they look. I just registered for a couple of fitted crib sheets and i have a cute decorative blanket that I picked out that I plan to use for tummy time but keep separate for sleep time.
  • me too!

  • we got a breathable one at our shower, but after we had babycare class DH made me take it back. He was insistent, so I decided not to fight him on it.

  • With DD, she slept in a pack n play in our room for 5 months. The first night in her crib, she wedged her little legs out twice. We got a breathable bumper which worked great for about 3 months. She then started getting stuck despite the breathable bumper, so she now has the full blown bumper pad on 3 sides. We could probably get away with it on 2 sides.

I'll see how it goes with this little baby.

  • We don't have one now, but I'll see how it goes. As far as how it "looks" (which seems pretty unimportant) I think it looks fine.  Who knows when the baby is going to first start sleeping in the crib anyway.

  • Someone bought us a mesh bumper, so I'm going to use it. But I won't put it in there until he can move around on his own. I just don't want his little arms and legs to get stuck.

  • Broken bones are easier to fix than a dead baby. I just don't get the point in the OP bragging about her embrace of products that have been proven to be a safety risk.

This is what I was thinking. Yay for stupidity!

  • I personally don't think there is anything wrong with them. Ive used them with my previous 2 and will again this time. There are "risks" with everything and if we followed every warning, then we wouldn't use alot of different product with our LO's. To each their own.

  • For everyone saying it should be fine or the timing of when you use it will be based on your baby's movement... the REAL concern for SIDS is that bumpers (even the 'breathable' ones) limit airflow and that is the reason you aren't supposed to have them in the crib.

Naked cribs for us... just a comfy fitted sheet and tailored cribskirt.

I don't use a bumper, but I also don't get this statement you just made.  If bumpers limit airflow and cause SIDS in a crib, why are bassinets ok to use?  I would think they limit airflow even more than bumpers in a crib.

I agree.  Also, pack n' plays.  PNPs seem to have similar "breatheable" material on the sides as breatheable bumpers.  The AAP warns against using breatheable bumpers, but doesn't seem to bat an eye at PNPs.  What if baby's face is smushed against the side of a PNP?

Someone chime in here if I'm misinformed.

I agree with both of your points but my original statement isn't an opinion.  It has been what all my instructors have been teaching as well as all the SIDS literature/documents we've been given.  They have also discussed 3rd-hand smoke and the impacts that it can have on your baby.

The message I took away from my classes is that the only recommended sleeping position/environment for a baby is in a naked crib, laying on a flat/firm surface on their back.

Now is that what most people do?  No... but it is what they are teaching/reccommending now.

  • We are not using one.

  • We have ours set up and just waiting on baby. We used one with ODS as well in a drop side crib. We never had one with DD because she would not sleep anywhere but in our bed which she did for 12 months.

There will come a time again when everything is no longer recommended or goes back to being recommended. Just as how babies were thought to be safer sleeping on their backs orginally, then "research" shows, tummy was best, now it's back again. Pacifiers were also thought to be a hazard when babies sleep, now it's recommended to reduce SIDS.

Point is, information changes often and because one person doesn't agree with something, doesn't mean they're stupid. Just do what you are comfortable with.

  • I doubt we'll use one and if we did it'd be a breathable bumper when she's older. *shrug*

I never thought of the fact that people use bassinets and PnPs and why that would be ok. Weird. Good argument.

Isn't the point of the mesh ones that they can't suffocate the child? Did I miss something?

  • I plan on throwing my newborn into the lions' cage at the zoo on our first trip.  I know it's not recommended, but the pictures of him with the lions will be sooooo cute!  After all, many generations of kids grew up in Africa where there are lions just out wandering around & they all turned out just fine.  There are "risks" with everything & if we followed every warning, then we wouldn't provide our LOs with lots of cool experiences.

  • I posted this to see what responses there would be. It's pretty funny how snarky people get when there is no definitive research on the causes of SIDS.

We are also using a used crib that was recalled GASP! I think parenting is going to be a huge wake up call for some ppl.

The rate of SIDS has been significantly reduced since they started recommending babies sleep on their backs. So I'm going to follow the recommendations to not use a bumper.  Since they don't know the cause, why take a risk?  Also, they re-call products for a reason, but totally up to you if you want to ignore another risk.
