Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When do you wean from dreamfeeds?

Every night at about 10pm we give my 6 month old a bottle.  She drinks varying amounts, anywhere from 2 oz to 6 oz.  We've found that if we don't do this, she'll wake at 3am hungry.

I'm fine with this for now, but at some point we'll have to wean her from these night feedings.  What should we do that? Now, at 9 months, at 1 year??

At what point can they go 12 hours without eating?

  • My pediatrician said 9 months.

  • My daughter got a nasty cold at around 7.5 months and I was still giving her a dreamfeed at that time. Anyhow, she must have had a ton of mucus in her throat cause she threw up all the formula.  This happened two nights in a row and both times I got my hubby to prepare another bottle since I thought she'd still be hungry from throwing it up but she would throw up that bottle up as well.  So on the third night I decided not to give her a dreamfeed cause I just didn't want her to throw up again especially in her crib.  It turned out she slept through the entire night.  That was the end of her dreamfeeds.  So, I think around the 8 month mark should be okay.  I think I read that somewhere too.
  • She can't go 12 hours without eating, which is how long she sleeps at night.  But if she doesn't mind eating at 10pm, rather than at 3am, then why wouldn't we just feed her at 10pm?? It's better for our family, and believe me, if she didn't want to eat at 10pm, she wouldn't eat.  Our pediatrician supports our logic on this.

Weird thing to be judgmental about.

  • With DD#1 I did this until she was 12 months. She was slow when it came to eating though. Even now, at 2 1/2 she will sometimes wake in the night and ask for milk.
