TTC After a Loss

MTHFR and Green Tea? (DS mentioned)

I have been drinking green tea while I wait to O and stopping as soon as O is confirmed. I always take my B-Complex (I have always taken this, like for years) in the morning, drink the tea sometime in the afternoon and take my PNV at night before bed. I know you are supposed to not take your folic acid within 4 hours of drinking the green tea because the tea can interfere with the absorption of the folic acid.

With my repeat loss testing they found that I have two abnormal copies of the MTHFR gene. My OB is prescribing me Folbic. My question is, should I drop the green tea altogether or is it still fine as long as I space out the PNV, Folbic and green tea?

I have had a successful pregnancy with no intervention and only taking the 400 mcg of folic acid a day from my PNV.

  • I've only ever heard about the green tea blocking folic acid absorption thing on the bump, I'm not sure how much medical weight I'de put on it. I'm also not convinced that green tea helps with cm beyond encouraging water consumption but hey, it's worth a shot. I really wouldn't worry so much about it, enjoy your tea.

  • Also, you should ask your physician about Metanx instead of Folbic. It's the pre processed version of the B vitamins versus the super dosing method. It means you WILL absorb it versus throwing a whole lot of the B's at your body and hoping something is absorbed.

Thanks Katherine. I remember reading that before I got the diagnosis. I'm planning to do a bunch of reading about it tonight and tomorrow and emailing my Dr with what I'm sure will be a number of questions. I maintain, she must really regret the day I got email access ;-)

  • There's actually a really great link in the resource section of the blog. I've scoured the interwebz about MTHFR and it's by far the most informative and easiest to understand article I've seen. It tells you all you need to know without jarring you wih over information.

Thanks. I emailed my Dr and she said that she and most of the hematologist she works with us the Folbic, but she said that she thinks any Folic Acid is fine, so if it I feel strongly about using the Metanx she will prescribe that for me.

  • RunningGal900 -

Did you learn anything more about MTHFR and folic acid? I see your posts were from years ago, so I'm hoping you're still able to receive this note.

    Thank you!
