Constipated baby?

DD was super fussy last night and today has had 4 or 5 harder poops. DH and I think she's constipated... she's been pretty fussy today, too. Dr. Google said a couple things... Vaseline on a Qtip, put it in her bum to help the poop out... mix prune or grape juice half and half with water and give that to her. She's FF. I never had a problem with DS pooping as an infant so this is uncharted territory for me. I will probably try the Qtip. Anybody have any thoughts?

Re: Constipated baby?

  • I'd try the QTip before trying a juice and water mixture without calling your pedi first.

I've heard of the Vaseline on a thermometer, but I guess the QTip is the same.

  • I would call the doctor first. Secondly, I would not use a q-tip if you do decide to go with Vaseline. A thermometer tip is smaller and less abrasive than a q-tip.

  • DD drinks about half an ounce of water.. just water, no juice ..everyday. Since starting this we haven't had any constipation issues.
If you are going to try the Vaseline I would use the thermometer, but not without calling her pedi first

  • Thanks girls.

Maybe I should have prefaced by saying that DH and I are both RN's, so our comfort level is a little different than most parents, I think.

I did the thermometer and it worked immediately, but she didn't poop as much as I hoped she would. She was still really uncomfortable, so we called the pedi and I played dumb. They said to do the thermometer a couple more times tonight if needed and call if she has a fever. We have an appointment in the morning just in case. She seems happy laying on my lap on her belly... it lets the gas out easier. It's just hard to hear her screaming in such pain.

  • If this becomes a recurring issue, you may ask your pedi about a daily regiment of miralax. My nephew was ff and had issues. They started adding miralax to one bottle in the morning and after a few days he was right as rain.
