I get all stabby when people address mail Mr and Mrs (insert DH's name here). My name is five letters long and I'm not DH's property. Just write my godddamn name.

/end vent.

  • Yeah, that's some seriously archaic traditions. It would bother me too. I bothers me at weddings as well.

  • Does not bother me.. They usually screw my name up anyways....

  • I prefer to go informal when I send my Christmas cards.

My grandmother did yell at me once because I addressed her card to her name and even though my grandfather was deceased at the time I was still supposed to address it to Mr&MrsGrandpa.

  • I hate it, too.

Like "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith"? Or "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"?

The second is only weird to me if you don't have the same last name. The first is just tremendously outdated.

  • I much prefer Mr. and Mrs Smith or the Smith family.  I don't care for Mr and Mrs John Smith either.

I'd do John Smith and Jane Doe on the address label. I'd mention in the invitation that children are welcome if you're inviting them to an event.

Yeah, the first one is awful. The second one I wouldn't mind if I had DH's name, but I don't, so even that irks me. But it's usually from old people so I let it slide.

I don't like it either. My aunts all do it. I feel like I should ask them to stop but they do it as a sign of respect. It's obviously generational in my case.

I mind less when my grandmother does it because of the generational thing. People around my age-- not so much.

I just think it's outdated. Women are not property anymore. That's my only beef with it. It takes the individuality out of the couple.

I left someone off my card list because I couldn't figure out how to address the card.  It was a married couple with two different last names.  I also wasn't close so I didn't bother figuring it out.

As a married woman with a different last name, I'd suggest John Smith and Jane Doe. No Mr. or Ms.

  • No bother for me, but it does bother me when my name can't be spelled. My friend would always spell my maiden name incorrect. What kills me is my nick name had a part of my maiden name in it, and she spelled my nick name right. It's not hard to find out the correct spelling of someone's name.

I think what SDD and others (myself included) are saying is that we don't get stabby over Mr. and Mrs. John Smith... I don't find it inappropriate or off-putting... I really DGAF and open all mail that comes to my house, regardless of the name on the address line... so I maybe pay it 2 seconds thought anyway.

I have bigger things to worry about than how my mail is addressed. Like, does the card inside contain money!?

Mr & Mrs (husband's name) doesn't bother me in the slightest.

It does bother me that everyone assumes I went back to my maiden name after my divorce when I didn't.  I do regret that now, 5 years later, but still, it's not my name.

It just seems like a stupid thing to get upset over. I'm sure everybody has other real issues to be pissed off about instead of the right way to address a invitation or card. Because people who send them this way are doing it the "right" way, no matter if you like it or not.

  • I really don't care. I get cards addressed in many different ways. It all ends up in the recycling bin and I never remember who addressed it which way.
