Work and pumped milk ?

Work and pumped milk ?

Are you going to be freezing what you pump everyday?  Or just using that milk for LO for the following day?  I have a decent stash, so I'm wondering if I should start using the frozen milk (from mid-October) now while she's at my mom's during the day and freeze what I pump everyday at work.  I'm thinking this way it will be rotating out the older milk and replacing it with newer milk...WDYT?  I'm starting back at work on Thursday and have no idea how much volume I'll be able to pump (I'm pumping on my two breaks and my lunch break) And a side note: I'm sick to my stomach and on the verge of tears when I think about going back in two days! Ugh.

Re: Work and pumped milk ?

  • I freeze what I pump at work and use older milk from my stash to feed her while I am away at work.

  • I am using the milk pumped for the following day.

Freezing the milk destroys some of the enzymes and antibodies, so it's best to give mostly fresh... Although frozen/thawed is still better than formula :)

I freeze any extra to keep adding to the stash... I plan on donating my milk (mom-to-family donation through Human Milk for Human Babies) if I don't use it within 7-8 months since it's good for 12 months in deep freezer.

A bit of advice - It helps to pump right before you go into work as well, because most women get the most milk in the morning... even if LO nursed that morning.

  • Rotating is the best way to go. I follow the 3 month freezing rule, but I know a lot of moms will use milk in an attached freezer up to 6 months or more with no problem. Frozen breastmilk looses most of the antibodies and stem cells, and a lot of the nutrient also leech out, so fresh milk is always best. Not to say frozen milk is not good, just fresh is better. I only work 2 days a week, so normally I do 1 bag of frozen and the rest fresh, which works well for me and my situation, but I know a lot of moms love the freezing friday's milk and giving frozen on monday routine.

I use frozen on my first workday of the week and fresh the rest of the week. Sometimes I use one more frozen bottle on Fridays because it's a longer day. That's been a good way to rotate through my stash a little, I just used up September's milk last week, I've been back a month and a half. Try not to stress too much, I was dreading going back but it is nice to have a little quiet time. I do end up looking through my phone at his pictures a couple times a day though : ]
All of this. I was freaking out about having to go back to work too. But I'm surviving. And it makes the time we do have together, much more quality time. GL, you will be fine!

  • Thanks for the advice--I think I'll do a mix of some frozen but mainly fresh if I can pump enough.  I'm going to pump after I nurse in the morning, and I'm also thinking about pumping on my 45 minute commute.  But I hope I don't have to do it while driving, it just sounds like a hassle.
  • This is what I do, too.

Whoops - meant to hit "quote" not reply...

I also give frozen on monday and fresh the rest of the week.  Friday's milk gets frozen and added to the back of my freezer stash.

  • I pump enough each day for DS for the next day, but I have a large stash (400oz) so I send frozen 2xs a week to help rotate my stash.

I remember going back to work and worrying so much about milk, etc.  It will all work out

  • I always needed to supplement one of his daycare bottles every day, so I used that to rotate my freezer stash.  Mondays he'd get 2 frozen bottles and two fresh (so that if he didn't take the last bottle it could be reused the next day).  T-F he'd get 1 frozen bottle and 3 fresh.

  • I do two fresh and one frozen bottle each day. That way he's getting mainly current milk with fresh antibodies to fight the germs that are everywhere this time of year. Using just one frozen lets me keep my stash moving enough that I don't have to throw anything away.

  • I freeze what I pumped at work and he gets frozen while I'm there.

  • I rotate. Freeze what I pump and use my stored milk for when she's with the sitter. I pump on my two breaks and lunch....FYI - my baby drinks more than what I can pump. I got worried at first but realized I could use the weekends to replenish some of my supply. So far so good. She's 20 weeks now and has been on strictly breast milk.
