LO complains of back pain...

All right, she first started this when we got on to her about something and she was upset. She said "it hurts", and pointed to her back. I of course went and checked her out because it concerned me. There was no obvious signs of injury, or anything of the sort, so I just brushed it off.

Well, she keeps saying that her back hurts and it's starting to worry me. However, I've noticed that she still only says it when it's a) bedtime, b) in the carseat c)when she is in trouble/not getting her way.

Part of me is thinking that she is too smart for her own good and realizes if she says she is hurt we will quickly come to her aid...but it's hard to tell. We made an appointment for her to be seen anyways, but I was just curious what you all thought! Any experience with toddlers and back pain?

  • Does it hurt when she uses the bathroom? My only concern would be a bladder infection. But you are probably right if she only does it when she wants to get out of something. Just weird that its always the same spit that hurts.

  • Is it possible that she hears you complain of back pain to your husband and he helps you do something or does something nice for you? Sometimes kids pick up on those subtle cues and thinks she might be able to get her way if she does what mommy does?

    Just a thought.....

We did take her in thinking it was a UTI, but she is already on antibiotics for strep, so they said if she had one that would clear it up anyways...

That was in the ER, and it concerned me they didn't want to look into it any further with Xrays or anything...that could be the worried mom bit though.

Or could it be constipation?  I've known of a child that had to have a baby enema.

I thought it might be constipation too, but she has had bowel movements within the last few days...

I don't usually complain of back pain, so I don't think it would be that. That's a good point though.

  • Where on her back? I'd mention it to the pedi just to be safe. Could possibly be kidney stones? IDK. She might have simply pulled something as well. I hope she feels better very soon. Or, as you said, she might just be using it as an avoidance thing.

  • Where on her back?  It might actually be her hips.  Of course I have hips on my brain because DS is having hip pain and has a click so we are headed for xrays and an appointment with his orthopedist.  It is definitely worth checking out.

  • Wait, are you the one who asked about signs of UTI's in toddlers? If this is the same kid, I think you should go back to your doctor. If it was a UTI and her back really hurts, there might be kidney trouble. Not every UTI responds to every antibiotic.

If she has a fever as well, you definitely need to see a doctor soon.

We are returning to the doctor, but she doesn't have a fever, doesn't have trouble taking fluids, no funny smell or color to urine, eating and acting very normal.
