Hi there,
So my son just turned 6 months old and we have been using the magic sleep suit since we stopped swaddling him around 3 months old. We use it twice a day for naps and at night. It has really helped him become an awesome sleeper. I put him down wide awake and he will just talk himself to sleep. However, he is really big and long for his age and has just about outgrown the 6-9 month size. Obviously the time is quickly approaching to wean him out of it and into normal pajamas. I know this will be a big transition because he will be able to flip over now and roll around way more so (even though he is already winding up in all corners of the crib even with the suit on haha). My main concern though is about his routine and consistency. He loves getting put into his suit and knows that it means he is about to go to bed.
I think we will be okay at night because the rest of his routine will still be in place (bath, lotion, bottle, etc.). However, I am concerned about naps because that routine will be gone. Currently as soon as he gets a little fussy (around 9:45 am, and then later around 1:45 pm), I take him into his bedroom, strip him down to his diaper, and put him in his sleepsuit. I turn on the fans, sound machine, his mobile, and give him his pacifier. Do I just put him down for naps in his regular clothes now? I know that sounds like such a silly question but I know he associates his sleep suit with sleeping so now I don't know what to put him in for naps.
Does anyone have any advice or has recently gone through this and can give some tips? Do you think I should try and keep him in the sleep suit until after Christmas? We have family coming in 2 weeks so he won't be in his crib then, he will be in his pack and play in our bedroom. So if he is still adjusting to sleeping without the suit, I would rather it not be right next to our bed haha. How long do you think it will take him to transition?
Sorry for the long post, thanks for any advice!!!
Re: help with naps and sleep suit- advice wanted!
Hi! I just posted something similar a couple of days ago. Contemplating weaning from the suit too. So I haven't done it yet, but after my post, getting responses and thinking through it, my approach is going to be to get through the holidays and our house move and find a time where he is healthy and just go "cold turkey" on a Friday night so we have the weekend to try to adjust. For naps and bedtime, do the routine exactly the same, minus the sleep suit and just put him in warm jammies. I am just telling myself it'll be a couple of days and then he'll adjust. We already sleep trained so I am hoping that "skill" of self-soothing will help us too.
Good luck mama! Keep us posted on how it goes, I'd be curious!
I would wait until after the holidays. We just weaned from the sleep suit and it took a couple of days for things to get better because he had to adjust to being able to roll around (he could not roll over in the sleep suit). But it was actually for the best, because he sleeps on his belly now (on his own) and sleeps much better than when in the sleep suit. So I would plan on a few days for adjustment, but your baby will get it.
We use a sleep sack now for naps and nighttime, and footed PJs for nighttime. I don't think it truly mimics the sleep suit, but putting on the sleep sack for naps is now part of the nap routine just like putting on the sleep suit used to be.
