Breastmilk storage question

How do you plan to store breast milk that isn't going right into the freezer? Will you use storage bags or are you using some form of storage containers?

I had this . . https://www.target.com/p/medela-breastmilk-storage-solution/-/A-13879425?registryId=JYU_nu12krOXp-BD7oxY6A&regTitle=Brad%20:%20Briana%27s&reqQty=1&preSelFlag=1 . . on my registry but didn't receive it. It seems like it would be useful for keeping milk stored in the fridge but I wasn't sure if it was worth the money.

Re: Breastmilk storage question

  • I used extra Medela bottles to store milk in the fridge if it wasn't going into the freezer.   Then I could just pop a nipple on them and use when needed.  If it was going to be frozen, I pumped directly into the storage bag.

  • I used bottles. I kept wet erase markers and wrote the date and time after I pumped.
  • I just used regular bottles.

  • I poured milk to be used in the next day or so directly into bottles (MAM anti-colic).  For freezing I used the Medela bags.

  • i used medela bags for the freezer but would pump into a bottle if i was planning to use the milk within a day or so.

**just remember not to store the milk on the door of your freezer - put them in a tupperware container in range of date (oldest at the front) and make sure to label them with date pumped

  • Like everyone else, I used Medela and Gerber bags to store milk in the freezer and if I was just keeping it in the fridge, I stored it in bottles.

  • I EP so I had a millon bottles everyday. I would pump and the put my news bottles in the back of my bottle line in the fridge. I had about 10 bottles of milk at any given time. Every other day I would pour my milk that was in the front of my line and put into 4 to 6 oz servings in my freezer bags, any more then that it would leak out the bags. I dated my frozen milk and laid flat to freeze. Once frozen I would stack in zipploc bags in my freezer. Since I EPed and had a bit of an over supply I had close to 6 months worth of frozen milk in my freezer when I stopped pumping at 5 months. Sadly we had freezer issues and I never got to use my frozen milk . I have never cried so hard as the day I had to throw it all away.

    Thanks for the thoughts ladies.

Did everyone just buy a cheap supply of bottles to keep the milk in?

I only used Medela bottles that I could pump directly into. We used them for feeding as well.  We switched to formula at 6 months and then we bought a supply of Born Free bottles and used those from then on.

re: throwing away milk.  I was super sad to throw away just a few bags of frozen milk, I can't imagine having to throw away an entire supply like that!  Would have been traumatic for sure!

What was the issue with your freezer? Our fridge is pretty old so now I am wondering if I should be checking to see if it will function properly.

  • I've been using a bunch of the Medela bottles - but that's only bc the NICU supplies literally as many as we want - since that's how we bring it in to them. Not sure how I'd do it if all of those bottles weren't supplied for free, but the bottles have been working really well thus far while I'm still ahead of what the girls are taking in (we'll see how long that lasts!)

Im not sure but it some how defrosted on us and we lost everything in it. It was a sad day but then we found out a few weeks later that DD had dairy issues so I would have had to stop using it anyway :( If I EP this time I am investing in a deep freeze!!

I would hit up any Second mom sales. I scored a bunch for cheap there. Also I would check your Walgreens. I bought some Medela starter kits there on clearance for $12 and it came with a set of flanges and 4 bottles!! I bought 4 sets because I am super lazy when it came to cleaning my flanges every time I used them

  • I used the playtex drop ins with dd, so I could pump into those bags and they sell a kit with "lids" for the bags. I just did that and stores them in the freezer, and then didn't have to buy a bunch of bottles. Or I bought the gerber bags which have a zipper seal at the top and then fold over the top of the bottle when ready to feed.
