Not doing sippy cups?

So far we haven't introduced a sippy cup, and I'm not sure I want to. My baby loves gnawing on regular cups, and eagerly tries to drink when we offer her a little water when she eats solids. She usually manages to get some down, but also spits some out as she swallows.

I'm just not sure how necessary or beneficial sippy cups are. I grew up without them just fine.

Pros:
Convenience on the go, eg, car seat.
No/fewer spills at home.
Independence, able to do it herself.

Cons:
"Need" to drink something constantly all day long.
Walking around and drinking at the same time. Huge peeve of mine!
Keeps them in baby mode longer. A real cup encourages to become a "big kid."
Just one more plastic thing in my house!

Anyone else saying no to the sippy?

Re: Not doing sippy cups?

  • I just do the sippy cup sometimes here but not sure how long i will do it so this opinion comes from when i used to be a nanny.

I didn't do sippy cups that much either. I did sippy cups when we went to the park or just outside because they don't spill. I also did sippy's when they were little and sick. toddlers get so dehydrated quickly and i wanted as much fluids in them as possible.

But when they were sitting at the table and eating a meal or snack then it was a real cup (started with just alittle bit of liquid because a smaller clean up if it were to spill - and it will spill at some point). by the time they were 3 then i did no more sippy cups at all. It was either a cup or water bottle.

I have one here and i really don't plan on buying another one. and he has 2 up at my parents house.

  • Our ped encouraged skipping sippy cups.  DD uses a straw cup because she won't drink from a regular cup, but I don't think they're necessary.
