So little miss Emma was 7 moths on the 3rd and has yet to begin crawling. We were at her pediatrician multiple times over the past week for an ear infection. I was joking around saying " charleigh, her older sister, was following me around the house by this age". The doctor web on to say she is concerned about Emma not trying to crawl yet and recommended we get her state run pt.
um..... Don't all kids grow/learn at a different pace. It's not like she does nothing. She has been sitting unsupported for months. Loves to stand and jump. Does tummy time and holds her chest off the floor for up to 30 min before rolling over onto her back.
Maybe it's just me but can we wait until she is at least "behind" a little bit before we jump in with both feet
Any opinion is welcome!

Re: Physical therapy????
Not that I'm say at seven months it's a problem but it is important to encourage kids to crawl.
I get that it would be important to encourage kids to crawl but I'd actually be interested to read those studies to understand the links they made. My uncle went on to university on an academic scholarship and became a veterinarian. I don't really see how skipping a milestone like crawling would cause developmental problems. Some children just don't enjoy being on the ground (like for tummy time) and I don't see why that would effect their problem sovling abilities.
Not saying the idea is incorrect, just would be interested to read the studies since I can't see an obvious connection. What about kids who don't scoot before they crawl?
Another thing is that all baby's have their own growth pattern and learning curve. The milestones are a guideline to help show what MOST babies are doing at this age. My boys didn't crawl until 10 months and started walking at 15. Our first daughter is just super high energy and has always met developmental milestones early. My dh calls he toddler on crack! Which totally fits

Edit to add
I am by no means saying that at seven months anyone should be worried!!!
:-) I don't think anyone here thinks 7 months is a time to worry! I'm just really interested in development and had never heard that before. Wondering if it has to do with the problem solving involved in crawling... if it's a set of skills that they develop in that time...it's fascinating to watch DD trying to piece it all together. It's quite the process... She's been working on it for over a month and (at least for her) there are so many mini phases involved...
This is what I wondered but then I'd assume kids who skip crawling and walk instead would be BETTER problem solvers, no? lol I mean they skip a baby step and move on to better things? hahahaha.
My daughter has been getting PT from the federally funded program that is run by the state since she was about 4 months old and I can't say enough good things about it. The therapist shows us certain things and exercises/play that we should do with Adalyn to help develop an area. For example, we are working on either scooting or crawling (not sure what she will do) and how to pull herself up. We are also trying to work on the pincher grasp when she eats Cheerios instead of palming it. She also let's us know what areas she is doing great in and is close to closing the gap, such as transferring toys from one hand to another, the prolonged eye contact, and clacking blocks or toys together (precursor to clapping).
Granted, my daughter is such a preemie (26 weeker) and we've always known she needs pt to close the developmental gap, but I would talk to your pedi some more about it. Could it be that you pedi is concerned about more than just crawling? Perhaps there are other fine and gross motor things that she feels should be checked out. You have to go back for 9 month shots--perhaps talk about it then?
I don't know how it is in your state, but for us they do an assessment where they evaluate 5 different areas and compare then to other babies that age. Then they decide how often you see the therapist (once a week, every other week, once a month, etc) and the therapist comes to our home. They do it in your home or the child's daycare because it is important to see how the child does in their own environment. I think that it is better to do something about it earlier than later. The program is a thpe of Early Intervention, but every state calls it something different, and basically by catching and evaluating things earlier It is easier to address any issues. You shouldn't see it as a bad thing. I see it as an additional resource to help my child succeed.

We also have the 5 point check every appt. for Emma. She has passed every other section. She is doing great in fine motor skills, babbling, sitting up, ect. The only area that she is not up to par in, according to pediatrician is the attempting to crawl
I am all for early intervention, I was really just wanting to see where others her age were in the crawling front
I love her doctor, she was actually my pediatrician. I think a few if we practices are a little out if date, but it is so hard to find a doctor that you agree on everything.
We did call the state program and try are going to come out for an evaluation. I would like to learn different ways to encourage her if that's what she needs
At this point I am not overly concerned with her lack of crawling, but it is never to early for a little extra help from the professionals
Thank you all for reading this post an helping us with your opinions

I never crawled, and I was an A+ student throughout my school years and consider myself to be a good problem solver. Hogwash!
I'm glad to hear that she is meeting all of her other milestones! You would be surprised how many parents I've spoken with who don't ask about milestones and their pedi forgets to talk about it, etc. I'm glad that you have a great relationship with your pedi! That is definitely something that is difficult to find.
Thank you so much for your T&Ps for Adalyn. As you can see, they definitely made a difference! I don't know what I would've done without my May Mommas who were all cheering Adalyn along. I can't believe that it's almost been a year since she entered this world at 1 pound 12 ounces!

Yes I talked to my friend she said her dr told her this plus it has to do with being able to move ones head independently from the rest of the body. Even the shortest crawling, army or traditional helps with this.
