Babies: 9 - 12 Months

1 y/o not walking

Hi everyone, I have a bit of a concern and just checking to see if anyone else is dealing with this. My lil girl is 1 today and she is not walking, I see everyone is posting about their child walking and how long they have been doing so, I don't think anything is wrong with her I kind if feel that she is just being lazy but she also is not really pulling up and just began crawling we don't go to the doctors until January so just seeing if anyone else is dealing with the same thing. Thanks for your advise!

Re: 1 y/o not walking

  • You think you're 1 year old is being lazy by not walking yet?  Some babies don't walk until 14-16 months.

  • Before 1 is really early to walk. There are just lots of very physically advanced babies on the bump it seems. I wouldn't worry for a long time, but if you are concerned you could always check with your doctor.

  • Plenty of 1 year olds aren't walking.  It's on the bell curve of normal.  I think around 18 months is the soft cut off for normal range for walking.

  • I'm pretty sure 9-18 months is the normal range for learning to walk.  I can assure you your daughter is not being lazy.

  • There is a 16 month old in my playgroup not walking yet and I know another that didn't walk until 18 months. My DS will be 10 months in 2 days and is barely making attempts at pulling up- no cruising and no taking steps when I have him standing with assistance.
  • Absolutely normal and nothing to worry about. Each baby is different and will walk when he or she is ready.

I have twin girls. One walked at 11 months. The other walked at 16 months. They're almost 3 and both are running, climbing, jumping and twirling with no difference in their abilities.

My 11 month old son is nowhere close to walking. He's a very cautious baby and won't even try to stand unsupported. He loves to be active and crawl everywhere and has no interest in anything more at this point.  He's perfectly healthy and on track with his milestones.

  • I wouldn't worry about it.  My DD is 11 months and doesn't even crawl, just scoots a bit on her butt or rolls if she's on her tummy.  She is perfectly content wherever I put her.  I wouldn't worry, one of these days you won't be able to keep her in one place.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • DD1 walked unassisted the week before her first birthday, and she was the very FIRST in her class at day care to walk, and she was also younger than half the class. I thought it a bit late for some of the kids, but was told that actually, my daughter was on the early side. Most of the other kids were still crawling or cruising several months later, and some didn't walk until 18 months. I get it. If my kid was 18 months and still not walking unassisted, I worry, despite being told its normal. Give LO some time and enjoy not having to run after them :)

  • My DD didn't walk until 16m, and she was not behind or delayed, just has a cautious personality (still does). She likes to know that she can do something before she tries it. She stood unassisted for the first time at 14m, took a few steps days before she turned 16m, and was walking full time just a day or two later. She was within the range of normal. It's not generally a concern unless they are 18m and not walking.

  • DS1 didn't roll back to belly until 9 months, didn't crawl until 11 months and didn't walk until 15.5 months. He is completely normal and healthy. DS2 crawled at 7 months and is walking at 10.5 months. He is completely normal and healthy as well. Try not to stress! Trust me, it doesn't help at all (speaking from experience!).

  • For every bumpie raving about their kid walking/talking/crawling/etc, there are 5 who don't speak up about their kid not doing it yet.  Just keep that in mind.

DS didn't walk until 16 months.  It's late but still within the acceptable range.  Sometimes walking comes out of nowhere. It might happen in just a few days.  I wouldn't worry about it yet.  Most pedi don't get concerned until 18 months.

If she's cruising, get her to hold onto the couch or coffee table, sit just out of reach with a favorite toy and try to entice her to take a step forward.  It'll give her good practice but she might not try to take a step for awhile.
