s/o Unpopular Opinion from someone else

I was just reading the post below and seeing the issues with Soy milk.  I posted earlier this week about Skyler vomiting after I gave her WCM, I plan to try again, but won't be surprised if she continues to vomit because it is what I do when I drink it.

Have any of you discussed other milk options with your Pedi's?  I will use your suggestions to discuss with her Pedi at her 1 year appointment if I can't get her to drink the WCM by then.  I have considered extended BF and am not against it, but she will still need an alternative at some point.

Can you ladies help??? TIA

Re: s/o Unpopular Opinion from someone else

  • Some people swear by goat's milk, which is apparently closer to breastmilk than cow's milk (this is only what I've read).  After they turn 2, I think you can give them rice milk or almond milk (if no allergies) too.

  • Are you able to eat dairy products like yogurt, cheese, etc.?  I hate to drink milk and never do (except I forced myself when pregnant) and DD won't drink it either.  The pedi said it is fine as long as she gets calcium and fat from other sources.  They don't have to drink milk after age 1, it's just a convenient source of nutrition.

She eats yogurt, cheese and ice cream (once, don't flame me!) with no problems and so do I.  Sometimes it give me a bit of a stomach ache, but I love cheese and ice cream so I don't care.  Maybe I could talk to her pedi about giving her other sources of dairy like you suggest.  Thanks!

I will check on the goat's milk.  Thanks!

In my post I mentioned my nephew who had trouble with milk portein and has handled all other types of dairy like a champ. He doesn't tolerate WCM well at all so he now drinks lactose free milk and that seems to be working out wonderfully. This was all under the care of his pedi.

Thanks!  I guess I will just try a few more times and talk to her Pedi at her 1 year appointment.

It makes me sad to know she will be 1 year in a little over two months.

  • The WCM thing is kind of a game.  There are something like 22 milk proteins.  It might be the lactose causing the vomiting, so lactose free milk might be worth a shot.  It might be a volume thing (too much at one time), so cutting WCM with rice milk might work.  Soy is another alternative.  I was super worried about DD's protein intake because in addition to the milk issue she hated meat.  So I worked on protein from other food sources.  I also was worried about calcium, so did greens, kale chips, fish and tofu.  If she's down with yogurt and cheese I would use those as my go tos for the fats.  The best thing my pediatrician told me is that in our society, fat and protein deficiencies are pretty rare if your family eats generally balanced meals.  It usually is only a concern if families eat out all the time and the kids won't eat fruits and vegetables. And when they get older, giving kids a Tums helps with Vitamin D.

  • I think Lauren is developing a dairy intolerance. She's on regular formula and I think that might be what's causing her to still spit up so much. I'm dreading WCM simply because I don't think she'll be able to drink it and I'm unsure of what we'll do instead. We go to the pedi on Monday.
