  • I HATE getting pedicures. Other people touching my feet like that skeeves me out, big time.

This also applies to foot rubs, even from H.

  • I dislike when people plan their weddings over holiday weekends. We have one in PA over Memorial Day weekend this year and another in VA over the 4th of July. I get that it's nice to have a long weekend to celebrate but it's more expensive for out of town guests to fly there. We have been watching ticket prices for both trips and they are outrageous.

I think 1st birthdays are a big deal. You are celebrating your baby transitioning into toddler-hood.
I agree! However, I will not be spending hundreds of dollars on a party or anything. But I do think celebrating it is a big deal!

  • It sucks buying gifts for kids who are obnoxious brats. BIL's step-daughters may or may not fall into this category.

This is a confession, I suppose. Whoops.

Also, anyone who says the blanketly "hate" a type of music automatically loses some credibility in my mind.  Really?  There isn't one single song in all of  X type of music that you like?  I'm not a fan of rap but there are some songs I crank up in the car...same with techno/classical/oldies.

I've posted this before, and it was controversial. I was reminded of it again when I was looking through DH's childhood Christmas photos for a project, and I stand by it.

I judge people who wear ratty old t-shirts all the time. It's awful that in all of DH's family photos, everyone (parents and kids) is wearing old, holey, faded, stretched out, oversized t-shirts. When I look at the photos, I see the clothes before I see the people. The photos look tacky, and every photo throughout the years look like this. There's not one I would consider framing.

Agreed. Take some pride in your appearance and the appearance of your family. You don't have to wear designer clothes, but even goodwill carries nice, not-worn-out items that you could wear.

Other than maybe my sister if she ever has a child, I don't want to see what's going on inside anyone else's ute. • Which leads me to my UO, which may not be that unpopular at all. I have a friend on facebook, and I swear her pregnancy is the most celebrated thing on earth. So far they have had a party to announce her pregnancy, a gender reveal party and they will have at least three large showers, (plus some for work and church, I'm sure) and they are planning a sip and see for after the baby is born. Really? I love babies, but it is a lot of fanfare for one child. And she announced her pregnancy at 6 weeks to the entire world, so this is stretching on for an eternity. I am not sure what my UO is in that, only that I think over-celebraing your child is annoying.

For some people, their children are the center of the universe. This is definitely on the level of "excessive" but I suppose it will be fun for the new mommy.

I'm excited for all the media fanfare surrounding Prince William & Kate Middleton's pregnancy! I keep seeing comments on the internet where people find it annoying that they are making a big deal about her being in the hospital etc.  I'm excited, and I liked reading the news articles giving updates on her condition. Geeked

I'm excited for them, but now that I've been pregnant and had my share of intrusive strangers/relatives, I feel bad for how much crap she is going to get since she is in the public eye.

I'll take this one step farther (or maybe just tailor it to a specific situation)... It annoys me when I see photos of new dads holding their just-born babies in ratty fraternity tees and the like.  Unless your partner had a super quick or very dramatic L&D, there is time to throw on a polo or clean plain t-shirt for the birth of your child (pack one in your hospital bag).

Typing that out feels totally ridiculous, but I swear I see so many FB photos where I go "Hmmmm, I didn't know so-and-so's husband was a Sigma Chi Beer Pong Champion... Ah, and hey!  New baby, too!  Fabulous!"

  • WARNING--LONG POST--SKIP NOW IF YOU ARE ON MOBILE DEVICE OR DO NOT WISH TO READ.

Just for background, I have BF'ed C for 9 months now, but my UO is that I think the supposed "benefits" of BM are so vastly overstated on this forum that it makes me want to stab my eyes out.  If I have to read one more post on the BF-ing board about how "BF babies make special fat cells that dissolve once they wean, unlike FF babies whose fat cells are PERMANENT" or "you can use BM to cure anything, including ear infections!", etc.

The only real "benefits" to BF-ing that have been proven by science is that BF-ing burns calories (and may slightly decrease the risk of breast cancer in women) and that it helps reduce GI infections--but even that benefit is less "amazing" than I think many of us are led to believe.  The most-cited study regarding lower GI infections in BF-babies concludes that for every twenty-five breastfed babies, there would be one fewer GI infection in the first year.  All the rest of the supposed "benefits" (less childhood obesity, super healthy immune systems (other than a slight decrease in GI symptoms), increased intelligence, etc. are now thought by many to be much more linked to the baby's family's financial stability, parental involvement and similar measures.  In other words, the type of women who are physically and financially able to BF for a year tend to be either SAHM with husbands who can financially support their families or WOHM in pretty decent jobs that have much higher working conditions (place to pump, time to pump, managers that don't guilt-trip them into stopping short of a year, non demanding physically, so that they have the physical stamina to keep up with the extra 500 calorie a day toll on their body).  It is a known fact that kids in middle-class to uper-middle class families are much less likely to be obese, less likely to get all sorts of illnesses, and are more likely to be more intelligent than average because they, as a group, have parents who are able to spend more time with them reading books and doing learning activities (instead of parents who work their butts off just to put food on the table and keep the lights on).  So, in studies where financial stability and the intelligence of the parents has been factored in, babies who were BF and FF were pretty much indistinguishable.

I say all this because it is just irking me in real life and on this forum to hear so many "my breast milk is liquid gold and it can cure the world's ills" talk.  Yes, BM has some benefits over formula, for the above 2-3 reasons.  But BF-ing also can, in some circumstances, cause mothers so much undue stress, physical torment (mastitis, absesses, bleeding nips) and cause the woman to bear a significantly higher percentage of the child raising responsibilities (moms usually have to work all day outside the home and then still wake up multiples times per night to feed the baby or pump, while dad just snoozes away).

Based on this, I just think that the benefits of BF-ing are overrated to the point of absurdity on these boards.  I have mostly enjoyed BF-ing my kiddo, and I guess I am glad that she was 4% less likely to catch a GI bug this year (but so far she has had a massive stomach bug--so who knows!), but I didn't go through any of the physical and emotional trials that I read about every single day on these forums.  I just wish moms were presented the entire picture, complete with scientific evidence on "why" breast is best, and then allow us to be adults and choose for ourselves whether the benefits outweight the burdens for each of our families.  I am over the patronizing and judging that goes along with this ONE decision out of the millions of decisions that we will make that affect our children's well-being in their lives.

All I have to say is that I would MUCH rather pay for a new car seat after it expires  than have an accident and find out why they expire. ALSO, it may be annoying to put your kid in rear facing, but  I would rather the annoyance than any terrible injury.

    I guess that's a couple things...

I know this could start drama...hence unpopular opinion!

I do not plan on replacing our car seats when they "expire" if they weren't in accidents that damaged them. I do not plan on keeping DS rear-facing until his legs hang over into the trunk--I'll probably even switch him around before two because he's big for his age and it's annoying to get him in facing backwards.

Just FYI--the reason you replace seats after 7 years (or whenever they expire) is that plastic does not react favorably to sitting in your car season after season.  The interior of your car gets significantly hotter than the temperature outside because of the sun beating off the windows.  Then, when you get in the car, you jack the temperature back down to a liveable number.  Same situation, but reverse, in the winter.  After years of these multiple temperature swings per day, the plastic does get brittle, and then it very well could shatter or bend in a way that it was never designed to do in a wreck.  IMO, the risk of having that happen could NEVER be less than the cost of just plunking down another $35-40 for a non-expired seat from WalMart.  That cost, averaged out over the seven years that you know you have before you will have to make that expenditure is virtually nil.

In fact, if you ever get in the situation where you literally can't afford an unexpired seat (or to replace a car seat that has been in a wreck) and you are planning on just winging it with the old one--send me a PM with your address and I will send you the cash to buy a new one.  I am not joking even a little bit.  That applies to every person on this forum.  If you literally have to make this decision because money is so tight, just drop me a note.  Car seats are very carefully designed to withstand specific stresses.  They should not be used other than exactly as stated in the instruction manual.  Off my soapbox! :)

  • I think it's really really shameful when women/parents don't do research on something related to their kid and take the advice of strangers/coworkers/the basically untrained medical technician at the doctors office instead without checking with their pedi. There is a new mom pumping at work and she was telling me she is having to supplement. When I asked why she said because he's always still hungry and wants seven to eight ounces at every feeding and she only pumps enough for four. She didn't ask her pedi how much he should be eating, research how many ounces a bf baby should eat at one time, or look at instructions on how to feed a baby slower so they don't over feed. She also thought the idea of adding cereal to the bottle sounded great when another coworker [a cna who I catch giving incorrect medical advice to patients all the time] suggested this would help. Her baby is ten weeks old. A ten week old breastfed baby should not be getting eight ounces at a time every two to three hours. I pointed her to Kelly mom and ended the conversation before my head exploded and now I judge her.

How hard is it to do ten minutes of research on the internet or call your Pediatrician?

  • I think releasing things (balloons, floating lanterns, etc.) into the sky to celebrate/commemorate someone or something is a TERRIBLE idea.

What goes up, must come down.  Just because you release it into the sky and watch it float away doesn't mean it stays up forever.  It comes down as LITTER that someone else has to clean up or worse, that an animal will choke on or get tangled in.  It makes no difference that it started out with good intentions.  Plant flowers or something instead!

On a side note, releasing butterflies/birds irks me too.  Most of the butterflies will meet their demise before they're released or shortly after.  And birds get all panicky when released and end up pooping on everything. Not very thoughtful at all.

As Sooner said, it has nothing to do with being in an accident.  Check out these Youtube videos.

I can't agree or disagree with turning him to forward facing before 2, but I doubt that he grows a significant amount between 18 and 24 months.  If you can wait until 18 months he should be fine until 24 months, if 4 year olds can still sit rear facing he should be able to make it to 2.  I don't get why you would want to put him in danger for your convenience.  Unless you were in an extreme situation like Lancy where her baby gets ill from being rear faced for more than 30 minutes.

Also, why would you need to keep them past 6 years anyway?  It looks like your kids are spread apart enough where they would both need to be in convertibles so you would already have two.  By the time either of them reaches 6 years of age they would need a booster seat anyway.
