Pregnant after 35

High NT Results :( - X Post

Just got a call from my ob and my NT/blood work screen came back with a high risk for DS - 1:25. I am to be referred to a perinatologist for a level 2 ultrasound and possible amnio after that. I know this is just a screening, and even then just a 4% chance for DS,but of course I have spent the rest of the afternoon worrying. Most of the reading I've done mentioned that the level 2 isn't usually done until 16-18 weeks, so will I have a few weeks to wait before we find out any more? (forgot to ask on the phone when to expect to hear back, they pretty much said they would schedule me in and let me know when).

My NT measurement was 2.4mm, and I am 35.

Also, wondering if I can find out if any of those MaterniT21 or other blood tests are available anywhere here?  I'm sure I'll ask the dr, but wondering if I could get in elsewhere if someone else offers them?

  • So sorry you are going through this.  Odds are still greatly in your favor but I totally understand your worry.  The nt measurement was good so that's definitely a good sign.  I know several people who had bad nt results and did not have babies with downs.

Since you are in AZ too just wanted to let you know that my doctor said there is just one lab that does the maternit21 and its in downtown Phoenix.  I didn't do it so I don't have more info. but you should check with your doctor.

  • It must have been your bloodwork that raised the alarm, because 2.4 is a perfectly reasonable NT measurement. Mine was 2.1. My ob's office said they don't start worrying unless it's over 3.0.

In most cases, the alarm is for nothing--but of course you can't help but worry until you know for sure everything's OK. I do think the MT21 might be helpful to relieve your worries. It is more accurate than the first tri screen. I'm sorry this happened to you and I hope you get some reassurance that all is well as soon as possible.

  • On the MaterniT21 definitely ask if it will be covered by insurance because my understanding from my OB was that insurance is likely only going to cover one screening test (ie NT/1st Tri Blood Draw or MaterniT21) and then will want to have you do a diagnositic test (Amnio or CVS) based on the results of the screening test.

I am sure everything will turn turn out fine!

  • Sorry your test results came back worrisome- like PP said- odds are still in your favor! Tip about the M21- check w/your insurance first to see if it's covered, just so you don't run into any $ surprises. It's so new, sometimes the insurance co. will reject the claim and it can be pretty pricey. GL and keep us posted!
  • I would definitely go for the MaterniT21 if you can.  It's way more accurate than the NT scan/quad screen.  You will need your doctor to give you a referral form, and they will instruct you on which lab to go to.  It usually not covered by insurance.  I haven't been charged for mine yet, but I was told when I called that the maximum charge would be $235, so I went for it.  Good luck!
