Re: Nick name for Jillian

  • Jilly makes sense, Lilly doesn't at all.

I'd use Jilly or Jill for Jillian.

This. You will most likely come up with several of your own nicknames anyways.

  • Lilly doesn't make sense.  If you like Lilly, I would just use that as the name.  For Jillian, I would use NN Jill.

  • I know some people say Lily doesn't work at all, but if you think about it, it's not much different from getting Bob from Robert. In both cases, you are adding letters that weren't in the original name. However, if you like Lily, I would just use that as the full name and not a nickname since it's a name by itself too. As far as nicknames for Jillian go, I have really only ever heard Jill or Jilly used before. Jilly is a little too cutesy for me though; I like Jill better.
  • I think Jillian is a beautiful name on its own...why do you need a nick name?

  • We call our daughter Jillian "Jilly" sometimes but my best friend's name is Jill so we never use that. When she first came home from the hospital our oldest was 15 months old and called her "Gigi" for awhile! It's a beautiful name and we always get compliments on Jillian.

  • I am Jillene, which often gets confused for Jillian or Jolene. The nn's that I use are Jill or Jilly.

I think Lilly would be a stretch, but it's your kid and you can do what you want. I just wouldn't be surprised if it didn't catch on.

  • Agree Jilly or Jill

  • I'd use Jill. Jilly would make sense, but I don't like it.

If you want a Lilly I'd name her Lillian.

  • I actually don't think Lilly is that far of a stretch.  Everyone is suggesting it as only a nickname for Lillian, but that is her name if you take of the "Ji".  I don't think it's a big deal.  Jill/Jilly is a more obvious nn though.

  • We call our Jillian "Jilli" as a nickname, but Jillian most of the time.
  • My younger sister's name is Jillian. She has always went by Jill. Sometimes when we are teasing her we call her Jellybean. I don't think Lilly makes much sense, however to each their own.

Same here.  Our Jillian is Jillian and she will correct anyone (including DH's aunt) when they call her Jill.  We sometimes call her Jilli/y as in JilliBean or SillyJilly but never write it this way.  Honestly, I call her MissBean, Pumpkin, or Honey more than I call her Jilli.

Like PP have said, we get lots of compliments on Jillian.

  • I am Gillian and went by Gill as a kid Gilly Willy to some : . Since 7th grade I've just been Gillian. I think Lily is an odd choice for a NN for Gillian/Jillian.
