Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Nighttime separation anxiety

My son is about 2 weeks shy of his first birthday. He has always been a "decent" sleeper (probably good for 4-5 9-hour nights per week). He has recently started having a lot of nightwaking due to what seems to be separation anxiety. He screams bloody murder and then calms as soon as we go into his room and/or pick him up. (His separation anxiety during the day is there, but not extreme). We have tried CIO with limited success. It worked 1 or 2 nights, but he also cried for an hour nonstop and only stopped when I picked him up. Last night he got so hysterical he vomited up his entire dinner. The only thing that seems to keep him calm is cosleeping, which I don't really mind except that neither of us sleeps well at all. I am a FTM and at a loss. Have any of you experienced this and what did you do?

Re: Nighttime separation anxiety

  • DD1 did this at about 15 months. She would go to sleep fine, and then wake up maybe 30 minutes later screaming from what I would deem night terrors. DH or I would go in and calm her, but she would refuse to go to sleep again. I started driving her around on the highway to get her drowsy again, and then transfer her back to her crib, and she would sleep fine. But I got tired of it, and its and expensive and dangerous (driving on the highway at night for no real reason) way to get her back to sleep. And DH and I were arguing over her crying, because he would let her cry and I would get upset with him. One night, while he was out of town, I left her in her crib crying, locked myself in my bathroom, and turned to volume down on the monitor. I could still see her, but couldn't hear her. After about 30 minutes, she sat down, then laid down, and then feel asleep. She never tried it again. Now she sleeps 12 hours at night (no nap during the day, though). Try it out. As long as he is safe, he can cry. Maybe feed him earlier so he can't vomit as much? Oh, and DD1 got a warm bottle of milk right before bed. That ALWAYS calms her down. Good luck!

  • It seems like our LO is going through this too. I thought maybe it was teething but he's not fussy during the day. Fortunately he settles himself back down within about 10 minutes. He might wake a few times but is able to settle back down. He hasn't co-slept since 2 months so he wouldn't know how to do that. The first night it happened i was up with him for 2+ hours but that last few nights we've let him CIO and he settles within 10 mins. Your case sounds much more extreme! Maybe the pick up/ put down method from Baby Whisperer could help? Sorry I don't have more help for you :-)
