Breastfeeding

Messy, fussy eater??

I don't really post on here but I do have a question that hopefully someone can help me with. My daughter in 5 weeks old and mostly breastfeeding though I do give her formula if I have a couple drinks or were out in public for long periods of time. I'm scared to nurse in public because my daughter is such a messy, violent eater. Not all the time but about half the time shell suck and squirm and unlatch latch back on just to unlatch again cry, grab at things, spit out the milk/drool all over, kick and punch. Is it something I'm eating? Doing? She's not hungry and just wants to comfort suck? She doesn't like pacifiers we've try about 5 different brands, she'll suck on one sometimes but not for a very long and spits it out with with disgusted look on her face. I would love to hear what other more experienced mothers think!

  • Mine did the same thing around that age. She outgrew it around 6 weeks I think. GL, hopefully it gets better soon.

  • Do you have an overactive letdown? Do you see milk spraying out when she unlatches?

If you have a forceful letdown, baby might fuss and pull off and make a mess... And cry, punch, etc because it is frustrating to be hungry and not latched.

  • Yea!! mostly on the left boob, I mentioned something to my doctor about her choking sometimes and she said it was probably that and shed work it out on her own but I don't think she is. Any suggestions to get it to stop? I used to pump a couple times a day to build a stash for when I went back to work and thought about ep (but decided to stick with the breast since it got easier), but stopped about a week ago because I thought its was causing a problem with my milk supply (if any of that matters)

Not pumping will help. Or you can hand express or pump just a little bit to get the choking-letdown part over with before putting LO on your breast.

Try reclining a bit when nursing so that gravity is helping you.

(If you feel like you have an oversupply after you stop pumping, you can try block feeding. Sometimes oversupply can be related to green diapers (fore milk/hindmilk imbalance) or extra gas and fussiness, and block feeding will help if you notice these things as well. Kellymom.com has some good info on this.)
