rockers/gliders

Is everyone getting either a rocker or a glider? We don't really  have room in our nursery because of all of the other furniture; however everyone keeps telling  me that getting one is a must . I'm thinking about putting one in the living room. What are everyones thoughts and if you are getting one which one did you decide on?

Re: rockers/gliders

  • I have a glider that I got at a garage sale.  It is great.  We put it in the baby's room because there is enough space.  I also wanted it there because that is where I anticipate doing late night feedings.

If you get one, I would recommend putting it where you will most likely use it.

  • Glider! I am using a family one but needs new cushions or they need to be recovered. I need to get one getting quotes or figuring out how to do it on my own. We will put it in the nursery because like PP said I am sure lots of late night feedings are in our future!
  • Guess I'm lucky we needed new couches anyway so we had decided to get matching couches and a recliner. But when we got to the furniture store I found a leather reclining sectional where the reclining seats actually rocked, it was the coolest thing and my husband talked the guy down to $1000, which was our budget for a couch, loveseat and recliner. We are moving into a 1bdr so LO will be in our room so a rocker wouldn't be an option in the small bedroom so this works perfect but if I had a 2 story or LO would have his own room I would want a rocker in the nursery.

  • I'm jealous of you guys. I wish we could have a glider in our nursery, but it is unfortunately not an option. :(   I just can't decide if I should get one for the living room or not get one at all...

  • We bought a rocker/recliner for the nursery in a neutral color so it can be used in the living room later on. I'm actually sitting in it right now, just hanging out in the nursery by myself. It's becoming my favorite room in the house!

Do you have some place comfortable to sit and feed your LO?  If you do, you don't really need a glider.  If you don't, consider one for the living room.

  • Glider. I currently had a rocker and I can't stand that it moves as I rock, at least gliders stay in one place. I'm looking for a good deal on one! For DD I had the rocker in the living room, when all she wanted to do was BF for 3 hours straight and rock the only way I kept my sanity was watching tv while we did this. If I was in a dark empty room I might have lost it. I also fed her in our bed, never in her room at night.

  • We have a very small room for our nursery but decided a glider was a must, to the point we're getting a small changing table/station instead of a dresser so the glider will fit with the crib. There are ones that are narrower, especially the more contemporary brands and styles. And, you often can find many listed on Craigslist if price is an issue. I was advised by other moms that this was the thing I should splurge/invest in, so we got a Dutailier upholstered one (the style we picked was Cadenza). One thing that can help save some money is not buying a matching ottoman and just getting a breastfeeding foot stool instead.

  • Question for people: we'll definitely get a chair for the nursery, but I'm not sure if a rocker/glider is necessary. I'm almost leaning towards a regular, comfortable armchair or recliner that we can move down to the living room and use a regular chair when baby gets older.

Is this a good idea? Do we need a rocker/glider? Will I be upset that we don't have one?

Personally I love the rocker, and if I had an actual glider with ottoman I would love it even more.  I still rocked my DD up until a week ago when I moved the rocker to the baby's room, so it was still getting used 2.5 years later.  We would also read books in it before bedtime, so it got a lot of use.

I have been told that the stool is a must.  I got a recliner/rocker with a remote but the stool still felt like it will work better to feed.  I got 20% off at buy buy baby with a bed bath and beyond coupon for both the rocker and the stool.

  • I bought a Lazy Boy for the living room which I will use.  We got a great deal on QVC and it's super comfortable!  We spend most of our time in the living room watching TV so it made more sense in the long run.  We have a comfy chair for the nursery.
