Thumb sucking

DS is almost 17 weeks and is thumb sucking really bad!! Sometimes he doesn't even take the paci! I'm scared that this will become a BIG problem. I know they are supposed to be exporing their hands but he does this in his sleep. Anyone else? Or any STM dealt with this?

Re: Thumb sucking

  • My baby is a big time thumb sucker. His hand is always in his mouth, I don't mind, though...better that than a pacifier that keeps falling out of his mouth.

  • I suppose you are right. I knew this girl I went to highschool with who was 16 and STILL sucked her thumb. (I know this isn't tpical). I know it is a really hard thing to break and that is why I'm worried.

  • Ds1 stopped the paci on his own around 2 months and randomly sucked his thumb for a while after that. Now hes just obsessed with his blankie.

Ds2 sometimes doesn't want his paci anymore. He sucks his whole fist at times. I'm not too concerned. I'll just deal with it later lol.
  • DS has been using his paci less and less and is crazy about his hand. He'll suck and chew on the whole thing. I'm not worried about it. He puts everything in his mouth right now. I wouldn't worry about it now.

  • I was a really bad thumb sucker when I was little.  They had to put a device in my mouth (I think it was similar to an orthodontic retainer) to deter me from doing this.  It worked.  DS2 is crazy with the thumb sucking, so I think he takes after me.  If they could fix my problem 30+ years ago, I'm sure DS2 will be fine.
