Hi All,
My daughter has just turned one. She loves her bottle. We have gotten her down to her only nightly bottle which is currently half formula half milk. We have a couple of problems. She seems to be hungry all the time and really misses her bottle. She is a great eater but is very small- 7th percentile in weight, 30th in height. We give her snacks which tides her over for a while, but the lack of bottle seems to be really hard on her. Our other problem is, since we've been giving her milk (maybe a half a small sippy cup during the day and some in her nightly bottle), it has given her terrible diaper rash. I don't know what to do. I have this kid who is hungry all the time and now the milk is really giving her bad rashes. Can anyone tell me how they combatted this? We stopped giving my son the bottle cold turkey and he was fine. I'm not sure how to deal with this one.
Thanks so much, everyone! I really appreciate any advice you can give me!
Re: Transitioning from Bottle
Your DD sounds about the same size as mine - DD2 is 7% for weight and 40%-ish for height. She's always been small, has never made it above 12% for weight. Our pedi encouraged us to keep at least one bottle a day until her milk/food intake were providing adequate calories without the bottle. So for us, that meant keeping her morning bottle (of all milk) until 13.5 months, when she decided breakfast was much more exciting than a bottle
We now offer her milk sippy whenever she asks for it (by pulling on the fridge door), and on an average day she gets about 15-20 oz of whole milk. Letting her have the milk sippy whenever she wants, plus regular snack/meal times, seems to have kept her from missing the bottles between meals. I also try to make sure she gets some protein with every meal and most snacks to keep her fuller longer.
I can't help with the milk causing a diaper rash, sorry
