Re: when to add cereal or oatmeal?

  • We skipped cereals, and went straight to fruits and veggies at 4 months to expose our LO to a wide range of tastes and potential allergens (our pediatrician said that she recommends not waiting until 6 months to start solids, due to a potential increase in allergies in kids that wait 6 months to be exposed to foods other than BM).  But the AAP recommends waiting until 6 months, so there is some disagreement among the experts. I haven't heard of any recommendations to start solids earlier than 4 months.

ETA:  Our pedi knew that we EBF and that is why she recommended starting solids earlier than the usual 6 month recommendation.  She said that introducing solids along with BM offers protection against potential allergens.  So, I am not sure what advice she gives to FF parents.

  • We just started/attempted to last week after his 6 month appt.  He didn't really care from them.  I started with whole wheat cereal. We started fruits and veggies a couple of time a week around 4.5 months.

  • We just started cereal a couple of weeks ago after a weight check when baby was 5 months old (he's at the very bottom of the chart, so his pediatrician wanted us to start giving him cereal 2x per day, in addition to nursing and giving EBM like we have been doing).  We've only tried the Earth's Best Whole Grain Oatmeal cereal - it took us a bit to get him to take it from a spoon, but he seems to like it so far.  We'll probably start other foods after his 6 month WBV.

  • We started at 6 months with DS1 and will do the same for DS2.

  • 18 weeks we started playing with oatmeal. She didn't really get it until 20 weeks. We started it to help with reflux, since she doesn't take bottles at night we did a very thin oatmeal. It's much thicker now with fruit or veggies.
