Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Blanket and pillow in crib

At what age did you start allowing your baby to sleep with a blanket and/or pillow? My son sleep in warm sleeps, so he doesn't need the blanket, but I feel like it would be comfort for him. He does have two stuffed animals he loves and sleeps with. I am ready to give him at least a blanket at 10 months, but my husband is totally against a blanket in the crib still!

Re: Blanket and pillow in crib

  • My son has had a blanket for a few months now. No pillow though.

  • DD and DS both slept with a blanket from birth, a small crocheted blanket given to them by a volunteer at the hospital.  I gave DD a travel sized pillow when I moved her to a toddler bed at 16 months but she didn't have any interest in using it until around 2.

  • My DD uses a small lovey blanket she's had since she was 3 months old, it is deff. Comfort for her. It's only like 20"x20" so it's small enough. However, I would feel comfortable giving her a blanket now 10mths I just don't because she's warm and has her lovey

  • DD is extremely attached to her blanket.  Its crocheted and she has been sleeping with it since 4 or 5 months.  No pillow.

  • DS sleeps in sleep sack, they don't need a pillow at this age.... esp because he flip flops everywhere there is no point. I would say no pillow until they move to a big boy (girl) bed. Like around 2ish?? DS sleeps with a few stuffed animals he likes to play with while falling asleep or waking up and his lovey he holds while falling asleep. Your LO already has his comforts... if you think he needs more maybe introduce a lovey/small sized blanket (like PP mentioned 20x20 blanket)
  • DD has slept with a blanket for a few months now.  She is 10 months.  She also sleeps with her 2-3 stuffed animals, and her lovey.  She doesn't use the blanket to cover up with, but to rest her head against.  I started out getting used to her with a blanket by giving it to her at naps first.
  • We have not put a blanket or pillow in the crib yet.  Once it gets much colder though I might put a blanket.  We have a small heater in the bedroom though to keep it a little warmer.

  • My pediatrician said she can have her blanket now that she's standing and cruising.  We didn't give our son a pillow until 18 months.

  • He's had an Aidan and Anais blanket in the crib since 6 months and a pillow since about 8. It helped him to not be so restless at night by having a comfy place.

  • My DDs have always had a blanket. No toys, but maybe a lovey here and there, and a mesh bumper. They sleep in footed pjs, but being in Florida, the AC is always kicking and I have a fan on in their rooms. The blankets rarely stay on them for more than five minutes as they are all over the place when they sleep. My 2 1/2 yo has a stuffed animal she uses as a pillow when she goes to sleep, but it ends up smushed in a corner after like 5 minutes. I can't remember when we gave that to her, but probably around 11-12 months. Not out of any concern for her safety, just didn't see a need for a pillow. The blankets help them sleep as they offer comfort. As long as you have air flow in the room, I think a blanket is fine, and why offer the pillow if they don't really need it?

  • Ethan has also used an A&A blanket since we stopped swaddling him in it - about 2 months old.  No pillows though - agree with previous posters - moves around too much to be useful.
  • Josephine has had a blanket since birth.  We added a pillow at 10 months.  She loves it and sleeps better (unless her teeth hurt)

  •  I've pretty much always used some sort of blanket during the colder months.  We started using a pillow a few months ago.  She sleeps better with the pillow elevating her head.  she gets congested at night.

But if your husband is dead set against it... i would not go forward.

I feel like both of these would be useless for DS. He flip flops all over the place when he's sleeping so they would absolutely serve no purpose.  He sleeps in a sleep sack with no pillow.

This for me too. Right now DS is at the bottom right corner of his crib.

  • Er, he's been sleeping with a blanket for months now. I even give him a stuffed monkey to snuggle with. No pillow though, but on cold nights I cover him in 2 fuzzy blankets to make sure he stays warm.

  • DS has been sleeping with a blanket for a few months now, and has been sleeping with his lovey for longer. I don't think I'll give him a pillow until he's close to 2.

  • Blanket - after they start to push up into a crawling position. They are mobile enough then to either get themselves out of a twisted blanket or to scream and let us know.  My DD hated blanket sleepers, so she now sleeps with several thin baby blankets in her crib.

Pillow - with the big boy/girl bed.  DS still doesn't use his half the time.
