I am kind of flirting with the idea of using a two part Mary name if we have a daughter. We have a super common LN so while Mary isn't popular right now, I think cumulatively the combo would be high; using a two part name would make the name more uncommon. I don't think we'd use an extra name for the MN though.
DH isn't Catholic so he is worried about the name sounding 'too Catholic'. I was thinking a two part Mary name paired with a non-saint name might seem less Catholic?
What do you think of these:
Mary Agnes
Mary Fiona
Mary Fern
Mary Ramona
Mary Victoria
Mary Heloise
Mary Bernadette
Re: Two part Mary names
Agreed.
Off the top of my head, I can tell you that there are Catholic saints named Agnes and Bernadette. You may want to check the others.
I like Mary Fiona and Mary Victoria.
We definitely won't be using Mary Frances as DS2's name is Francis.
I do really like Marilyn though.
I know, I just really love the combo Mary Agnes and wanted to get feedback on it. Bernadette is my favorite name but DH isn't on board.
aww! Yeah, that would be way too close, obiously. Marilyn is nice! Not too common and very pretty!
I also always assume the parents are catholic.
I consider Mary names to be more "old Southern" than Catholic because they're all the rage down here. Betsy was almost named Mary Eleanor, and we would have called her Mary Nell. I loooove double names.
A lot of people down here pair Mary with family surnames, maybe that would sound less Catholic? Mary Winslow was another name we considered for DD, and I know girls named Mary Britt, Mary Stuart, Mary Winstead, Mary Bennett, etc.
For me Mary = Catholic.
But, I DO love Mary ________ names!
On your list I really like Mary Heloise, Mary Agnes, and Mary Bernadette.

Mary Agnes & Mary Bernadette SCREAM Catholic...they actually sound like nun names. I'm Catholic and I do think Mary-whatever does sound Catholic, but not sure how much of a big deal that is.
I know of a "Mary Grace" and I think that's very pretty.

My sister's bestie is a Bernadette and she always hated her name. But I like it. It just almost seems too long paired with Mary. What about Mary Claire/Clare?
Agnes is nms, but I think Mary Agnes sounds the best. I'm not Catholic, so I don't know anything about saints' names. I did know someone named Mary Catherine... I'm sure there's a Saint Catherine, but I do think those names sound really nice together.
I'd be careful of throwing just any name with Mary. I think I like two syllable names paired with it the best. Three syllables just feels a little much for some reason.

I'm from the south = I like double names. Ok, well I know not everyone does but it's more prevalent here than anywhere else.
I've known a Mary Jo, Mary Ann, Mary Beth, Mary Ellen, Mary Margaret and a Mary Ruth and none of them are Catholic. So I don't equate double names with Mary as a Catholic thing at all. I guess Mary Bernadette might. Or even Mary Agnes. But I wouldn't make assumptions based on the name really.
My two Grandmothers (I'm Irish Catholic) are Agnes and Mary Joan, so Mary Agnes SCREAMS Catholic to me. I love it, of course!
Honestly, I think some of your mns are too long to make for a good combo name. I'd suggest something shorter.
I like PP's suggestion of Mary Bennett. I think that makes the name sound young and refreshing.
Other than my Grandma's name - Mary Joan - which I love, my two favorite Mary names are Mary Charlotte and Mary Alice.
Mary Agnes screams Catholic at me too... which is good in my corner
