Parenting

Had my first parent "freak out"...

Yeah, I know. 99% of what happens here isn't *actually* about parenting. But I like to go against the norm. ;)

Ugh. At the hospital, everyone kept saying how perfect Dez is. Like, no one had anything to say aside from watching his jaundice levels. No bit deal; I had it, he was RH Positive and I'm negative, and he was 2 weeks early. All good signs that he may have some. He did, it went down, no big. WELL, when we went to the pediatrician, she said he was great, and then asked if anyone told me about the dimple on his lower back. I said no, but that I'd noticed it. She then proceeded to tell me that she wanted to check it to make sure that he didn't have to have surgery. (Sacral Dimple)

Whut.

I know it's probably nothing, and that it's a precaution. But HOLYHELL that was a hit out of left field for the chick still battling hormones. Good thing my mom was there, because I grew silent to keep myself from crazy-lady losing it.

That is all. Carry on with your non-parentingness.

Re: Had my first parent "freak out"...

  • Sounds like my old pedi. Rosie was a few weeks old and was spitting up lots. I wanted to make sure there wasn't reflux or a milk allergy. Pedi decided that Rosie needed an U/S since she could has some sort of problem with the esophogus and stomach connecting. Totally freaked me out. Rosie was fine though. Turns out she was a "happy spitter". This was also the same doc that sent me for another U/S later cuz she couldn't identify an organ.

More than likely it's your doc either being too cautious or trying to get more insurance money. Either way, Dez is probably fine.

  • Coming out of lurking for this one.

My husband had a sacral dimple at birth and no one ever noticed it. If they had, they would have found out he had tethered spinal cord syndrome. He needed Neuro surgery on his spine at age 13. By then, it had already caused all sorts of problems and it was far more traumatic for him to have surgery at that age than if he were a baby. By the way, the surgery itself was fine and didn't cause any problems..

I tell you this not at all to scare you, but because it's much, much better to find this out as a baby and get it addressed. That said, most sacral dimples are nothing.

  • Don't worry! My son was 3 weeks early, jaundice, and had a sacral dimple. You do want to have it checked because the sooner you catch a tethered spine the better. If you can, go to a children's hospital. My pedi first sent us to the hospital I delivered at and the report came back that it was a tethered spine. The pedi wanted a second opinion and sent us to children's. They were wonderful. Right away, the tech said we reviewed the ultrasound of the past hospital and do not see a tethered spine. She said regular hospitals are not used to looking at babies and can make mistakes. She did the ultrasound to be sure and since she knew I was so worried, she got a radiologist to immediately read the report so I did not have to wait for the results. My son was fine and it was just a sacral dimple that closed on its own. It is common in babies who are early. If i ever have a child who needs something checked, I am going to insist on going to children's right away. I spent a week worrying until the children's appointment and it was for nothing.

  • Sounds like our pedi (that we changed to another one in the practice about three months later, by the way). She had us freaked over DD's head shape at birth and also hip dysphasia. She booked us appointments with two of the very best specialists in those fields within DD's first month (which was nice, but kinda made me freak more that it made it seem like these were really big issues then if we have to see the very best). When we saw both specialists, each one was like, um, it's fine you're here but these really aren't a big deal. They guaranteed DD would outgrow both issues because they were so minute. They each kept us on monitoring only appointments - the head for three months - the hips for a year, and we were released from both without any treatment. While I appreciate the caution, I think she freaked us out as new parents. She also costs me about $400 in co pays that were not needed too.

That sucks. I believe it only gets worse. When we took baby O home from the hospital he still didn't have his first bowel movement. Later that evening he was screaming uncontrollably. I took him to the emergency room ugly crying. I was a hot mess. I have my barely 3 day old son at an emergency room. Long story short, they took his temperature internally and moments later he finally did. I was crying for hours upon hours.

We freaked out because LO took a while to have his first and was also screaming a lot. Our pedi reassured me that he was still in the "normal" window. Sure enough the next day - he pooped and we celebrated! Then we looked at each other and said "We're parents, we just celebrated a poop".

  • I agree with PPs. They are probably just being overly cautious, because things can go so wrong so quick with little babies, they don't want to leave anything to chance. DS' pedi was the same way when his jaundice was still present after a few weeks, and also ordered an U/S when the medication for his reflux (which turned out to be MSPI) wasn't working.

I'm sure baby will be fine!
