Do I need a double stroller?

My husband and I are trying to decide whether we need a double stroller or not for when we have our second child. By the time this baby is born, our daughter will be 3. What do you ladies think? Do you still push your 3-year-olds around in a stroller?

  • We do! Sometimes the older kids like to walk and depending on how long, sometimes they like to ride. We have been places with a single stroller and have ended up carrying the baby so our toddler can ride. I've since tossed our Ergo in the bottom of our stroller to cover all grounds when out and about as well.

  • With my girls, they would want to ride if we were going to be out all day. We used one for them around that age at Disney. Heck my four yr old will still ride sometimes. We ended up getting rid of our Double and getting two Maclaren Volos. We are expecting baby number 3 in 2 weeks and have a Joovy Sit and stand. My four old will likely stand more than sit.
  • We are trying to figure this out too. Our DD will be 3 when the baby is born. She likes to walk but likes to ride too - especially when we are out and about or on vacation. We have 4 strollers already, just for her so we may just be a family that pushes 2 different strollers instead of one double, so we don't have to buy anything.
Married my BEST FRIEND on December 1, 2007. Started TTC in March 2008. Found out we were expecting our first child in October 2008 - but had a m/c in December 2008 - resulting in a d&e. Met with a RE in May 2009 and set a plan - but conceived unexpectedly on our own! Our precious little Sophia was born on February 9, 2010! Lilypie Third Birthday tickers

  • We are not getting one. DS will be 3 as well when DD is born. We might get an adapter for our Uppa Vista so he can stand on that if he needs to.... but he hates sitting in his stroller as it is....

Ha ha, this describes us perfectly!  We've taken the umbrella stroller to the doctor's with #2 sitting in it while #1 walks with us and leave with #1 riding in it while DH is carrying #2!  We have the Britax B-Ready with the second seat and I think it's great.  #1 likes to ride in either seat and never complains about being in the bottom seat, which I've noticed people assume might happen. I also like that we had the option to place the infant seat adapter on the top or bottom seat.

  • I'm going to see if I can get by without one.  DD will stay in daycare while I'm on maternity, so I don't see a huge need to have a double right now.  On weekends if I need to take them both somewhere, I can wear baby & push DD, or DD can sit in the shopping cart.  Or if MH (or my sister/MIL) is with me, we push 2 strollers.

However, I can also run out to BRU and pick up a double later if I really can't manage without one!

  • I'm planning on getting one but mostly bc I take long walks almost everyday in my neighborhood.  DD would never be able to walk along and I feel like even a sit and stand would get uncomfortable for that distance.  However, I think by the time #2 arrives, DD won't necessarily need the stroller for short trips to the mall, etc.

  • You will if you go anywhere like the mall, zoo, amusement park but not for errands. A sit n stand IMO works okay but a 3 year old still wont sit down and understand not to just get up and walk off and they often need a place to nap!

we have a side-by-side and an incline and I love both for different reasons but if I had to suggest one for a 3 year old and newborn it would be something that is a single which can convert to a double (we have city select). We used the car seat attachment, sometimes just a single, sometimes double, and we have a glider board so she can ride on the back for a quick trip as a single.

  • DS1 wants to walk about half the time.  I love having a double stroller, as it is good if we are out and he needs a nap too.
