Natural Birth

Intro and researching midwifes Q

I've been a lurker for about two years now and I guess I should probably introduce myself. It all started when I watched my SIL have the typical hospital birth, with every intervention in the book. I just thought to myself that there HAD to be a better, more peaceful way to bring babies into the world. I've done a bunch of reading and researching (mostly thanks to suggestions made here!) . And now after experiencing a chemical pregnancy last July, were expecting (fingers crossed) our first next summer.

Anyhow, I'm curious if any of you ladies have any suggestions on how to properly research midwives in birth centers. I have narrowed my choices down to two centers, and I want to make sure I have done my research before I interview them. Is there any state licensing board (or other credible website) to make sure that there aren't any complaints filed against the birth centers I am leaning towards? Or is this something I should trust the midwifes to tell me during the interview process? I have googled their names and came up empty handed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.. thanks :)

Re: Intro and researching midwifes Q

  • I cant be too choosy because there are only 2 midwives in my area.  Its a regulated profession here so they are all nurse midwives and it's funded by the govermenent (we dont pay for midwifery care) so they book up fast.

I didnt get in with the midwife who delivered my 1st baby so I am going with my only other option.

Have you looked at  https://www.ratemds.com/? both of mine were on there

If its a regulated profession where you live there should be some kind of database.  We have this  https://www.cmbc.bc.ca/

  • In Ontatrio, they are covered by the government health care, so we don't have to pay for them. Therefore, they are in high demand and hard to come by. Here, there is a waiting list and you kind of get whomever is available. Not too much of a choice. :( They're all wonderful, though.

They are also accepted in place of doctors or nurses in the hospital.

The most important thing is how you feel around her. She has to make you feel good and comfortable and that all depends on what personality you are looking for. I prefer someone funny and slightly rude over someone nice with no sense of humour lol.
