Curtain length

Throughout our house, the curtains go from the curtain rod to the floor.  I was all set to order the same for baby's room, but then got to thinking about it... Do I really want curtains that go to the floor in her room?  It seems like shorter ones might be safer for when she's learning to walk and she can't pull on them quite so quickly.  What have you ladies done?

Re: Curtain length

  • I think for the baby's room, shorter is better :) We had floor length curtains in our family room when DD was about 1 and she did pull them down. Luckily the rod did not hit her, but it could have. I think valances are great for a baby's room. When they learn to pull up, they may even be able to reach shorter curtains.

  • Ours are floor length and my son has never been interested in them (15 months).  I did use the kind with the rings and hooks though, so if he pulled on them and they did give, the fabric would fall to the floor, not the rod.

  • This is so funny because I was JUST looking at curtains online today and couldn't figure out what size I wanted! I think I decided on the shorter ones. I've been having a hell of a time finding the perfect color ones in the size I want though.

  • ours are short..just the length of the window, but that's because, apparently, measuring the previous curtains and adding 2 inches on all sides for hemming isn't the way to measure for curtains, so DH and I didn't buy enough fabric for Mom to make them shorter.. Tongue Tied

  • We did floor length.. but, we are also in an apartment and dont plan to be here when shes moving.. instead of getting new ones when we move i plan on quick stitching them to be short so she cant tug and what not, but still have the option for long in the future

  • We just did valances.  If you think about it, even shorter curtains are long enough for them to pull on.

  • I have preexisting blinds and have to remind myself about the coord that hangs that one to pull on, can be a hazard if it is too long ... know there are hook things you can wrap the coord around, or just need to rotate the rod instead when want to let in light.
