Cloth Diapering

Does this wash routine sound appropriate?

I just got a brand new LG front loader (with steam) and I'm trying to figure out a good routine for washing diapers.  We won't start for several more weeks - but I'd like to get a plan in place.  What do you think?

**Speed Wash (cold, no spin, heavy soil) = 17 minutes

**Bulky/Large Wash (prewash on cold, hot wash, medium spin, heavy soil, + extra rinse) = 1 hour and 35 minutes

(90% of our CDs are BG freetimes, so I'm hopeful we'll just always be able to air dry)

Additional questions:

If I want to add vinegar to my "prewash" is that appropriate at every washing?  Or just as needed?

Would you use the steam?

I've read the sanitize function is too hot for the CDs?  Is this something you would suggest never using - or maybe 1 a month to strip?

We've been using Tide Liquid Free and Clear on our clothes.  However, liquid is no good for CDs, correct?  Should I just get the powder of the same thing and use that only for CDs?  Is the powder something that works well for clothes, too?  School me on detergent.  I am a creature of habit and not sure where to even start.

Thank you!

Re: Does this wash routine sound appropriate?

  • Your wash routine sounds fine. You may find that a warm or hot prewash works better than cold, though.

The sanitize cycle will ruin your elastic, so it's not recommended.

I've never used vinegar on my diapers. If you use a good detergent, you shouldn't need it.

Tide Ultra powder is a great detergent for diapers (and clothes!). Liquid isn't recommended, especially with synthetic diapers (which Freetimes are) as the binding agents that keep the liquid a liquid can also bind to the diapers resulting in buildup. You can try the F&C powder, but it might not be strong enough - it really depends on your water.

  • I may be able to help you with a couple of the questions.  I have a front loader but it's an HE.  I do a cold rinse, then warm/cold cycle, then an extra rinse.  I use original powder Tide and I can use it on my other clothes too.  You aren't supposed to use liquid detergent and nothing with fragrance or softners.  I haven't used the sanitize or steam function.  My diapers always come out clean with the cleaning routine I use.

I used to do a cold rinse and spin before I started developing stink issues.  I now do the quick wash with no spin in cold.  Then a HOT/Cold rinse with extra rinse for the wash setting.  No stink issues ever.  We are almost done using diapers with my toddler.

Vinegar isn't needed.  The sanitize setting isn't needed either.  It will ruin everything but cotton/natural fiber prefolds.

I recommend doing a tub clean once a month (to clean the washer clean) with a cup of bleach.   Also, my HE FL has a little value at the front bottom you unscrew to clean the filter out.  Check that monthly as well and clean off the gunk.

For detergent, I use Dropps (baby kind) and order them on amazon subscribe and save.  I just went ahead and use it for all our laundry to get rid of confusion.  I rarely run out, but if i run a little low, i head to Whole Foods for some Ecos laundry detergent.  Works great as well.

This is very helpful! Thank you!

So it sounds like my wash cycle will work well (at least for now) and I'll make sure to do that tub clean with bleach once an month, along with the filter cleaning.

  • Don't use the sanitize cycle unless you have a yeast rash issue, then only use It once or twice in my opinion.  Anyway BumGenius Freetime makers cottonbabies recommends bleaching once a month with 1/4 bleach and they don't recommend vinegar.
If the house ain't burned down and the baby's fed it was a successful day. Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
