3rd Trimester

Natural ways to jumpstart labor?

Not looking to start that now though, since i'm only 37 weeks.

But what kind of spicy foods are good ways to help induce labor?
I'm thinking Wasabi Peas.. not sure if they're too hot, or not hot enough?

Re: Natural ways to jumpstart labor?

  • I think you can try pineapple. I don't know about wasabi peas but good luck when you do start jump starting!

  • I ate a crapload of spicy food and tried a few different ways but nothing helped. I delivered just short of 42 weeks. Baby will come when she/he is ready as long as everything is normal.
  • I tried everything!!! Spicy foods, bouncing, walking, sex, tea, epo, .... Trust me, do NOT waste your time. I delivered at 41 weeks at nice healthy 9lb 4oz baby boy. There are benefits to having them stay in longer as well, such as better luck nursing. I know it's hard to hear, but they will come when they're ready.

  • Although my dad keeps offering to drive me down a bumpy road when the time comes, the only natural induction methods I know of with any reliability are stripping membranes, nipple stim, sex, walking, and castor oil.

  • I wouldnt go too crazy, but some of things are so ridiculous that it's just funny to try. For example, my aunt swears that if you swallow a tablespoon of sugar and then drink a glass of pineapple juice you will FOR SURE go into labor!...WHAT?! haha.

I found this on Pinterest, if you want to give it a gander:

  • Do not use castor oil. Seriously. I made the mistake of using it with DD, and although I did go into labor that night, the contractions I had were the worst pain I ever had with only 30 seconds between and When they broke my water there was meconium.

There were 5 NICU doctors in the room because of the meconium, and I did not get to hold DD right away because they had to clear her lungs. Fortunately she is a healthy toddler today, but meconium aspiration can be deadly. If me taking the castor oil in any way would have contributed to harming my baby, I wouldn't have been able to live with myself.

It could be a coincidence that all that happend after the cadtor oil, but why risk your baby's health and life? I still get mad at myself for the stupid castor oil: seriously...just relax and the baby will come when it is ready.

  • The OB said the best way to jump start labor was lots of sex and nipple stimulation. In fact, he told me that if my water starts leaking before I have any contractions (like last time), to not even call until I've had sex. DH was more than happy to follow those instructions.

Wait...  After your water breaks is when you are supposed to NOT have sex, as the baby no longer has any barrier to infection.  Orgasm, I could see, but not vaginally.

There is no hard evidence, but there does seem to be a correlation. While the meconium link is questionable, there is a definite link to maternal dehydration and it can affect milk supply.

UTI's work in the same fashion as castor oil. I'm surprised more don't jump on that option. If you are willing to put yourself into what is essentially self induced stomach virus, why not an infection to help it along?

ETA: And caster oil should never, ever, ever, ever be done without consulting your doctor and them giving you specific dosing instructions. And since 37 weeks is not full term and this would be tantamount to an elective induction, you would be hard pressed to find a doctor that would go along with that option. Elective inductions are banned prior to 39 weeks in many places for a good reason.

While I will not argue that 39 weeks can be preferential to 37 weeks, 37 weeks is full-term according to both the Mayo Clinic and the AAP.
