I teach at 5 schools (K-5, currently teaching only 4-5th) and I love my kiddos but I'll probably just wait until someone notices. I will definitely let them know in Feb when I'm done with their rotation and let them know I won't be there at the beginning of the year due to maternity leave especially my 4th graders.
I don't know if I will be getting a sub or not because my position is very tricky with 5 schools and complicated schedules. I'll talk to my boss about it in January when we get back from vacation and let her know! It should be interesting
I told my close teacher friends. I'm thinking of telling the kids on Valentines Day. I'm also going to read Socks by Beverly Cleary to them. I have a cat and I think they'll understand. The parents will be fine because I'll be there the whole year.

I have been thinking about this very same thing for a while. I teach first graders so if I tell them, I am bound to get the "where do babies come from?" questions. A friend of mine brought in her sonogram picture to tell the kids and she had a few angry parents that told her she had no right to tell their children so that kind of spooked me. I think I might give the parents a heads up in our weekly newsletter and let them address any conversations with their children if they choose then tell the kiddos. That way I can also tell who reads the newsletter
I'm not planning on telling anyone at school until the first trimester is over (unless bad morning sickness forces me to). With my first baby I told everyone at 12 weeks. I was starting to show at that point and it would have been hard to hold off much longer. I told my students last time by playing hangman.

Ugh, parents can be so crazy! You have to tell your students at some point! You may want to hold off on bringing in a sonogram to 1st graders, but I teach 2nd (and used to teach 1st), and I think it's perfectly appropriate- and necessary- to tell the kids you are going to have a baby. I was worried the first time about having kids ask where babies come from. No one ever batted an eyelash. I found that the kids had seen so many other pregnant women in their lives (moms, aunts, etc.) that they didn't really care about the how. But if anyone does ask, I would just tell them that that's a question to ask mom and dad and divert the subject.
I have no idea how to tell them! I will announce to the whole staff after Winter Break and since I have some of the staff's kids in my class, I am sure the news will spread quickly. I will probably announce to parents sometime in Jan. or Feb. and the kids right after. I have 4th graders so if I start to show they will pick up on it quickly.

I told my students last time around 18 weeks when I was beginning to show. I teach 2nd gr. I read a great book called "my teachers having a baby." It was funny that most didnt catch on by the end of the book. I may read it again this year. I probably won't be able to wait that long this time since I'll prob be showing earlier. And not one kid asked me where babies came from. If a kid does, I'll tell them thats a conversation to have with mom or dad. Lol

Would that book be OK for 4th graders or is it too young?
I thought about e-mailing parents the Thursday we get back from Christmas break to tell them and let them know I'll be telling the kids on Friday.

I think it would too young for 4th graders.
Youre good about emailing parents. I just let the kids tell the parents. Word gets around FAST! Lol
I've already told the administrators (principal, APs, and dean) because I teach middle school, and this year I have two particularly challenging students who are already infamous amongst all the admins at our school of nearly 2000 students. I figured they should know that if they see these kids getting sent out of my room more often, it's not because my classroom management skills are suddenly slipping, I'm just trying to control my stress level.
As for students and parents, I won't make it publicly known until they start asking, which will happen whenever I start to show... Maybe around mid-January, but who can say for sure? The day that I walked into school wearing an engagement ring for the first time, it seemed like every single one of my students noticed within the first 10 minutes, then the news trickled down to parents soon after.
I teach band and orchestra, so I have about 150 students. I'm not planning on telling the parents, they can find out from other parents or their children. I also just figured I'd let the kids notice on their own. They'll eventually ask, and I'll say yes. Not planning on telling any of my coworkers until after the 1st trimester is over. The school nurse knows, and I'll tell my principal first. (I hope nothing gets up on facebook!)

Oh that's a good idea. I do that a lot with vocab words--so they'd never think twice about it
We've been working on grammar, so I thought about telling them to correct a sentence like mrs ****** is having twins on july 10 2013 or something.....

I work in 2 special ed classrooms, K-3 grades. I'm close friends with both teachers so they already know. As for the kids, I will wait until I'm showing. I'm not sure they will really grasp the concept until that point. Last time we just started telling the kids that I had a baby in my belly, around 16 weeks or so.
TTC since 6/2003. m/c 9/14/03 8 weeks, 5 chemical pregnancies, mmc 6/04 12 weeks, Michael born sleeping 5/25/05 at 22weeks always our angel, fought ovarian cancer and won, m/c 4/06 5.2 weeks and 7/07 6.6 weeks,Our Miracle baby girl born 4/8/10,mc 12/18/11 at 5.3 weeks, BFP 10/26/12 dating u/s on 11/8/12 showing a strong heartbeat!EDD July 4,2013. My co-workers are all ready in the know because I am friends with many of them on FB and they knew what a terrible journey we had been on for the last 3 years. I had to tell the 2 teachers I co-teach with because I had been having m/s and needed to run out of the classroom!
As for my kids, I will probably tell them in the second semester when I am out of the first trimester. I may wait to see if they notice depending on if I start showing or not. Sometimes they notice everything and sometimes they notice nothing, I teach high school special ed and have many of the same students in multiple classes so who knows what they will pay attention to on a given day?
