Clipping Fingernails

I'm pretty sure this is one of the worst tasks as a mom!

I finally got Hazels clipped both hands in one sitting. Up until now I have attempted to file them but they never seem any shorter and I think maybe worse than when I started.

Anything you have found helpful when clipping their nails? I still have one baby left to tackle!

I dont have any tips I just clip them while he is sleeping

Curious to see the responses. I know everyone says to do it when they sleep, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna risk waking DS after finally getting him to sleep. At this point, I think his nails are longer than mine. I wish I could take him somewhere to get them done like I do for my dog.

I wait until E is sleeping, turn on a bright overhead light so I can see the nail easily and hold one finger at a time. I'm always nervous about cutting her finger but so far (knock on wood) it hasn't happened yet.

I completely agree, my girls sleep so light and hardly ever. I'm not risking waking them up. I wish the pedi would do it at their appointments haha.

I found using really small scissors works way better than clippers. I also do not risk waking them I do it after a bath, when he's calm and happy. For my older one, singing and blowing on the hand works well.

I clip them while he is nursing. He usually gets very relaxed/drowsy and I can clip them with little struggle.

I haven't tried clipping yet, I'm still just filing them down. It amazes me how dirty his fingernails get.

I haven't clipped. I've tried filing, but I swear it doesn't work lol. So most of the time LO hangs out in clothes that has cuffs for her hands

I also ask experienced family members to clip them because I am too afraid to do it.

Same. I tried doing them during his bath the other day and nicked his skin and it bled :[

I use little scissors, ones with blunt tips to avoid any stabbing : she lets me cut them only while she's nursing. I just cut them straight across, kinda lifting the nail tip with the bottom blade and cutting each nail a little bit at a time. It gets easy with a little practice :]

I usually do it when he's eating, because it's one of the rare occasions he relaxes his hands from his normal fist.

Yesterday, I managed to do it while H was burping him.

With my may 2009 boy I clipped the tip of his pinky off with the baby clippers and had a heart attack so from then on out I just bit them off. I did this with my march 2011 girl and my September baby too. I don't use clippers on them until they are over one and can understand I need them to sit still :

I bite them. That way I can feel where the nail ends and where the skin starts. Also, I can bite them while he's eating, sleeping or taking a bath. I just have to remember to do it!

I rest DS on my legs and just go at it. I keep a firm grip on his hand so he can't move them. His fingernails grow really fast so it's pretty easy to get underneath them with the clippers. No biggie! I remember being very nervous about doing DD's the first time.

DH does it! I realized one day that I don't think I've ever cut Ds1s nails. DH is good at it, why mess with what works?

DH files and clips while I nurse her. We're in the "no way am I waking her for that" boat, though I know a lot of people swear by the "Bite them off while baby sleeps" method...

I get MIL to clip them. My nail lady clips them if I could visit her. My cousin clips them. My former nanny will clip them. I've gotten pretty good at outsourcing it.
