BFers some questions

Soooo....I feel my body changing and would love to know if it is bfing related:

I have a different body odor. And it seems like my deodorant has a hard time keeping up. Showering twice a day keeps it in check, but is this a bfing thing?

Also, I am dry: my lips, my skin, my hair. Never had that before. I drink like a mad person too. Do I have to drink more than five liters a day? Seems excessive.

Again, I may have more questions later...

Re: BFers some questions

  • Yes to both. The hormones can cause the body odor, or a different body odor. Your dry skin is flustering me because 5 liters is crazy. Could it just be dry weather?

  • I was really dry and had to drink a ton of water. I didnt have an odor but I was super sweaty and my hair always felt greasy.
  • The dry is partially hormones but partially this truly random weather we are having.  My skin is totally freaking out right now and I am always thirsty.

  • I still drink water like crazy, even  now, 1 year+ into FB-ing. I still have night sweats, which is annoying, but no body odor beyond that. But every person is different - it could def be related. No skin dryness either for me.
  • I never noticed a change in body odor, but I do know that for the first few months the sweat is excessive.  For me, this was really only an issue at night, but I've had friends say they sweat like a whore in church all day and all night.  (I was also in training for a half marathon during those first few months, so I might have been getting out my sweat then.)  I would imagine that a change in body odor could also be a result of either the amount of sweat, or the same hormone release that causes the excessive sweat.

As for amount of water, I was ridiculously thirsty all day and all night.  Every single time I would breastfeed I would go through at least 16oz, and since I was feeding probably close to 10-12 times a day in the beginning, that would be around 5L.  And I'd still be thirsty even when I wasn't breastfeeding, so I never really thought about it, but I probably was drinking over 5L.  Your body really uses that water in milk production and will sap it from any resource it can, so you may need to drink more.  I know, it's crazy.

  • Yes, I was so stinky at first and apparently it's totally normal.

As for water, I just drank as much as I could, never keeping track.

It's also winter so maybe your house is dry? Try a cool mist humidifier.

  • I have noticed that I have to use more deodorant since before DD was born.

  • I just weaned last week, but yes to both. I was always SO thirsty. Especially right when my milk would let down. My lactation consultant told me to drink to thirst ... as in, if I didn't feel thirsty, I didn't need to force the water.

  • Jeez, I mean, I don't force the water at all, but it just seems out of control. But, I guess as long as I don't get negative side effects, I keep drinking. Never thought I'd see the day. I am one of the people who survive on a glass of liquid a day without ever feeling thirsty. I have never ever been like this!

As for the odor, my whole body smells sorta sweet. It's weird but not stinky. And the sweat...well, showers and deodorant.

This was me. My skin was super soft prior to pregnancy. Now it's softish again but my feet are always dry. My hair is also much greasier now compared to pre-baby.

  • I swear I drank GALLONS of water while nursing. I smelled terrible and I sweated all the time up until I stopped nursing. I was all around gross and smelly and hormonal. Fun times!

  • I didn't have either of these issues...  BUT...  I started getting terrible ingrown hairs ANYWHERE I shaved.  Legs, underarms, cooter.   It's getting a little better now that we weaned.  I guess it just goes to show you that hormones can mess you up in many different ways.

Have you tried switching deodorants.  Randomly, my body will start to get funky with Degree then I switch to Dove.  Then the same will happen with Dove and I switch back to Degree.  I have to do this like 1-2x per year.  Just an idea.
