Pregnancy & The Foregone Glass of Wine

Hi there.  I'm just doing a bit of investigating for a class I have.  Just curious how many women out there miss drinking alcoholic beverages while being pregnant?  While I completely understand that there are some things forgone during the time that little bun is in the oven, I'd like to get a vote on what drinks and libations women most miss while pregnant!  Is it a glass of wine, an ice cold beer or your favorite mixed drink you are looking forward to the most once you bring your bundle of joy into the world? Thanks a ton for your input!-Jenny

  • I do miss it. I am not a big drinker and never have been, but a nice cold beer would be nice to have when i get a pizza or buffalo wings. I also enjoy a glass of wine with some of my other meals. The compliment well :) I am not dying for it, but there are occasions I wish I could have it.

  • In my first tri, even the smell of alcohol made me nauseous. As I approach my third tri, and stress of life/the holidays kicks in, I would like to get a little buzzed every now and then. Definitely mixed beverages and/or hard cider.

  •  I was a regular, light drinker - glass of wine with dinner, meet friends for a cocktail. Usually not more than a drink in a night but would have that single drink 4-5 nights a week. So yeah, I miss that "unwind" glass of wine after work or the fun of the really fantastic cocktail bar/restaurants here. Miss it a lot.

I do suspect the answers may be different for FTMs (like me) and those with kids already

  • I am a wine drinker. I miss it terribly. I miss drinking in general. Im not an alcoholic by any stretch of imagination, however, I enjoy my cocktails. I also work in the industry so it makes it that much harder because Im around it all the time. Here is a weird craving...I was sitting on the couch the other night and I wanted a big fat joint! I havent smoked marijuana since my 20's. Im 33 now. It was just weird! (FTR, I would never)

  • With my first I didn't miss it at all. Now that I'm pregnant, working full time, taking care of a toddler and my husband works late, I wish I could have a drink now and then.  But I also would never have even a sip while pregnant, even though most people think itis safe. It is just not worth it to me; I don't miss it enough to risk.

  • I used to have a drink a day most days of the week (glass of wine or beer with dinner). During the first trimester I didn't miss it or crave it all, probably because I was so sick all the time. Now I occasionally miss it, especially after a really stressful day at work! I'll probably be craving a beer when I come back home after giving birth, it's so refreshing when you need to relax!

  • I miss it.  I miss having a glass of wine and hanging out with friends as a way to unwind.  I still hang out with those friends, it's just having a water or iced tea feels like something's missing.

I guess it would be a glass of wine, if I actually gave it up.  While I did not drink during the first trimester, I'll have half a glass with dinner a few times a week.

    This is me too.

  • I'm a pretty big drinker and so is my husband and all of our friends. I loooove beer and also really enjoy cocktails and wine. The first trimester just the thought of having a drink made me wanna ralph. But now I do miss it, I think especially because it's such a big part of our social life.

Last weekend we went to a brewery tap room and I had two samples. It was glorious!! I think I'm going to do that every weekend -  a few ounces of beer, half a glass of wine. I'm confident that it's fine.

  • I love a good red wine, and sometimes a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. I do miss it--I'm kind of all or nothing in that I'd rather sit down and have a couple of drinks or none at all. No 1/2 glass for me :) So I haven't had a drop to drink since my BFP, and won't until after the baby is born.

With my first pregnancy I didn't miss it that much but I do this time around. Things just seem more festive with a drink!

  • I miss it every so often, but I at least take a sip of whatever DH or my mom is drinking so that I don't miss out completely.  Kinda sad that I get my pumpkin and winter beer fix in a single sip, but it is what it is.

After giving birth, I don't see myself having a drink for awhile until DD2's nursing regulates and gets more predictable.  Hopefully by summer I'll be able to enjoy one here or there.

  • I miss the IDEA of the nice glass of red wine on a cool fall/winter night, but the smell of it isn't appealing to me right now, and I'm actually enjoying this lengthy streak of sobriety -- no hangovers, no headaches, etc.

  • I miss my Franzia Crisp White Box-O-Wine.
  • I miss it occasionally. Mostly during social get togethers. I was always a social drinker, and it's hard being the ONE person in the group not drinking :(. With DS later in the pregnancy I drank a half a glass of wine a month, and I feel it should be fine enough with this LO too.

That being said, I allow myself to have a small glass of wine on special occasions or date nights, so I don't really miss that.

  • I definitely miss it but I also enjoy the taste of different alcohols and it was a semi-large part of our social activities (not that we are binge drinkers but we definitely have drinks at most social occasions). I don't give up alcohol completely while pregnant I just limit myself to 1 glass of wine or 1 beer maybe 1x/week (once out of 1st tri). What I miss most though and cant wait to have is a nice bourbon and coke- heavy handed on the bourbon! Or a full margarita not just a few sips from my DH's!

  • I don't actually miss being able to drink alcohol at all, but sometimes - after a long or frustrating day at work - I miss it being an option on the table... if that makes any sense.

  • DH and I would have a drink when we went out to dinner or out with friends. DH will still order a beer when we go out and I'll smell it lol. I'm 14 weeks and have heard somewhere a small amount of alcohol is ok but I've been so nervous that something bad could happen that I probably won't risk it.

Pretty much this.  Didn't miss it with my first pregnancy.  But now with a toddler, work and all the house/yard work....I do miss my glass of wine after work to relax and unwind.

  • I have really missed wine, but used to drink liquor, beer and wine about equally.  I wasn't a really strong liquor drinker though and I can usually feel like I am getting a substitute with a non alcoholic drink.  With the pregnancy beer doesn't taste as good (when I have sips of DH's), but I really crave red wine!

  • I like an ice cold beer... but i don't really miss it because they make non-alcoholic beers.  So, when I really feel like I need that taste - I have a Coors NA or an O'Douls.  Kicks the craving with much less risk than a "full" beer.  I don't really miss the "buzzed" feeling.  Actually, its kind of nice, and I will probably keep this up for a while after LO is born.
  • I miss everything, the glass of wine with dinner, a cold beer during the game, going out for drinks with friends, taking shots.. lol (no, I'm not an alcoholic).

Especially because I feel like I've been a bit more stressed lately, I'd like to unwind and have a drink when I get home, take the edge off.. but I keep telling myself that it's not like I'll never be able to have a drink again.

  • The first trimester is missed my weekend beer. Now that it's getting colder out, I'm missing my wine and favorite cocktails. But, in the end it's worth it. I may splurge and have a glass of wine at Christmas and a glass of champagne at New Year's.

I think I miss raw sushi and coffee more than alcohol though.

  • I know there is a huge debate on whether a small amount of alcohol is safe or not during pregnancy but once in awhile I still have half a beer or half a glass of wine with my hubby during dinner. But honestly I normally cant even finish it, after the first few sips I lose the taste for it which is weird because before I would have a beer or a wine every night. Maybe the slight indulgence once in a while helps me not think about it as much.
    BabyFetus Ticker
  • I miss it sort of.  I like drinking wine, and sometimes mixed drinks.  Unfortunately, it has ZERO appeal to me right now.  For whatever reason, during pregnancy any thought of alcohol makes me ill.  Ugh.

I would totally be one of those that has a drink here & there too.  Booo!
