March 2012 Moms

If you in-home daycare

Ok March Moms help me out. I am watching a friends baby (as well as mine since I am SAHM) throughout the day 7:30 am- 5:30 pm) Started today!! Whew am I tired and sipping my glass of wine whilst I am typing ;)

Any who -  She is a single mom in the service and her regular child care provider got a job so she was looking for someone to watch her LO. So naturally I offered and the extra cash would not hurt!

Here is my question. What do you pay (or ask for) per day/week/month for an in home child care. My mother is screaming at me saying I am not asking for enough. But with all my research I think I am middle of the road. Plus I don't want to put her out.

I am asking for $30 a day =  $150 a week = $600 a month. Does that sound about right? She provides food, diapers and such forth. I did purchase a double stroller at a local thrifty baby ($50) to make it easier on me. Since we love walks!

Little background if it helps: My son almost 8 1/2 months her daughter about 8 weeks older (10 months and walking!!) And I live in Virginia

Any thoughts, advice, tips greatly welcome!! TIA :) And in VA you are aloud to take in 1 child to watch that's not your baby or not your family to watch without a license.

Re: If you in-home daycare

  • DS is in an in-home daycare part time.  I pay $50/day and provide all food, diapers, etc.  If he was in full time, it would be $165/week.  We're in the suburbs of LA so it's a HCOL area.  This was pretty much standard as far as cost from the research I did.

I don't know what it would be like where you are - do you know anyone who uses an in-home daycare near you who could tell you their rates?

  • DS is in an in-home daycare but it is a licensed provider who has 4 infants about 5 toddlers (plus two employees) so I'm not sure it would apples to apples with your situation.  With that being said, we pay $240 a week and we provide all the food and diapers.  Her price was comparable with other in-home licensed providers in our area.

  • Did she disclose how much she was paying the previous person?

  • We have a mutual friend and she told me that she was paying $25 a day. We live in suburbs of Va Beach, VA. My mother wants me to ask for $50 a day.. But me not being a "license professional" I think that's pushing it. Agree? or push it? or split like $40 a day? Note I am not an aggressive person and after telling her 30 a day I would feel so awkward asking for more.`I just don't want to rip her off or be ripped off, know what I mean?

  • Definitely hard to ask for more after you agreed to a rate.

  • Well we are doing a trial 2 day a week (Tuesday and Thursday) first to see how it goes and she knows that. Prob start full time after Thanksgiving.

  • I think it all depends on what you are offering.  In my area pricing seems to range from 35-50 dollars a day.  The lower end seems to be just basic care, whereas the higher end seems to be educational programming and food provided.  I think what you are charging seems to be reasonable seeing as she is providing food and you aren't licensed.

  • My SIL does our daycare (she is lic.) from her home and she charges 40.00 per day. We get a little discount because we're family :) But I found that 40.00 per day was pretty comparable. We live in a suburb of St Paul MN.

  • We use a center but the going rate here is 4045/day for in home care. They just did a news piece on Denver saying we are top 3 in childcare expense though so that is probably higher than the average city.

  • Thanks ladies. I think I am going to stick with my gut and stay at $30 a day. Seems pretty fair :) and tell my mom too "shhhh" lol

  • My first DCP charged $30 per day before she went back to work full time. The new one charges $25 per day. I think you're fine!

  • If you arent putting it through taxes as an income... she can't claim dependent care expenses.. so that makes a big difference to some people. I think $30 a day is fair do's and regardless of what other people are or aren't charging, if it covers expenses incurred, you don't have to pay insurance premiums, license fees or taxes... It's a decent rate unless her kid is a nightmare you may just be the one needing a sitter one day and she's probably going to be more than happy to help you out

  • Well ds goes to an inhome daycare and we pay $40 dollars a day so 200 a week regardless if it's a holiday or we go on vacation since it's our childcare providers job just like we get paid for days off when we work full time. We provide the diapers, food etc but when our son is old enough she will provide the food as well which she does for all the 2 year olds etc. Our son goes from 7 - 5:30 daily. Definitely ask for 200. $200 where I live is a amazing deal for us because the big places like Chesterbrook are around $345 a week which was definitely out of our price range. Definitely take at least 200. It's a hard job!

  • I've noticed that in-home daycare rates can vary drastically depending on the region you're in. I pay my daycare woman $125 a week (4 days a week from about 8am-5pm). I provide formula while she provides food. She also uses my cloth diapers (but that has no affect on the weekly charge). She's licensed and even goes to various trainings each year. This year she went to a specialized training for watching little ones from 2 months- 1 year. I'd say you're priced well for not being licensed and her providing food/diapers. In my area (country of SW Michigan), though, I'd say you'd be pushing it without being licensed. My friends living by me also pay $125/wk for their un-potty trained ones (but again... I think it really depends on where you're located). Hope this helps!
