Blood in poop/Pedi GI

(Also posted in 3-6mo)

So a quick background of the babygirl (bbg).

Born 7-15, 8.2pounds at birth 15.09 now. Never misses a meal as her Pedi says. From birth had severe gas issues, screaming in pain, muscus, blood speckeled poop. After trying Enfamil NB, Enafmil Gentel, Gerber Good Start, Nutramegin - we decided the Nutramegin was the best due to a cow milk protien allergy. Well here we are almost a solid two months on the Nutramegin & last night we had a bad bloody poop. So off to the doctor we went. Now we have a list of symptoms to watch for & an appointment with a Pedi GI at MGH in the morning. More bloody poop this morning with a few fits of screaming in pain...

What do I expect at this appointment? The Pedi couldn't be sure.

Anyone had a similar experience?

Obviously I am nervous...

Re: Blood in poop/Pedi GI

  • A lot of babies who have milk protein intolerance are also soy intolerant. I'd try Alimentum to see if she does better on that and if not, try Neocate or Elecare.

  • Her weight gain seems good. I initially BF my DS but he developed bloody stools and refusing to eat, as well as weight loss, around 4 months. We initially had me cut out dairy from my diet but to no avail. We then tried Nutramigen and Alimentum for DS but he still had bloody, mucousy stools. We were referred to pedi GI and DS has been on Elecare since June. He's been doing fairly well. They may order blood work and stool cultures to rule out any infectious diseases. Good luck!!

  • Thank you for the feedback.  We went to the Pedi GI Friday, after an exam anda stool check he put her on Elecare.  She hates it.  Won't eat, and when she does cause she is starving she won't hold it down.  We are riding it our for a few days since she  has also come down with a terrible cold so it may be a combo of the new formula and this cold.  We go  back on the 13th and hope for no  blood in stool.

  • Hi there.  My son is now almost 5 months old and he developed milk protein allergy at 2 months old.  I stop BF and started him on Alimentum, which my 2 year old was on and did fine.  Unfortunately the Alimentum did not work for my almost 5 month old so ped suggested we see a GI ped dr.  We did and she put him on Elecare.  He has been on Elecare since the end of Sept. and still has mucousy stools.  They also test his stool for infection and that came back negative.  He had a sigmoidoscopy and they really can't find anything at this time so we are switching to yet another formula....Neocate he has been on this for a day now.  Don't know how long it takes to notice any changes.  It is so frustrating and I feel for you!
