My daughter got Scout, that leapfrog dog toy, for her 1st birthday. We already have the Fisher Price Laugh and Learn puppy, and she's not in love with it really. Should I return Scout or hang on to him? He is still in his box and she'll play with him for a few minutes but I think she's more interested in the packaging...
Just wondering if this is something they get into as they get older or if it's most popular before a year?
Re: Scout?
While I personally don't have any experience with Scout, I can attest to the fact that my son received a handful of toys for his 1st birthday and even last Christmas that he seemingly had no interest in. I kept some of them out and put others away in his closet for another day and many of them ended up being some of his favorites.
Sorry I couldn't give more specific advice!
IMO, it's a better toy when you take it out of the box and personalize it. You can add your favorite songs such as patty cake, Old McDonald, etc. Add your childs favorite food and color, and even add your child's name. You don't get the jist of Scout when you leave him in the box. Lol.
My younger brother got my twins Violet and Scout for their 1st birthday. We were able to find DS's name (Slade) on their list, but unfortunately (and not surprisingly), they didn't have DD's name (Kyplee)...so we just had to spell it out on there for her. They are just now getting to where to actually play with them and squeeze their hands and feet. Before, they just lugged them around...but they are really neat if you can actually personalize it to say their name...
That's what I wanted to hear :-)
I had both pups for DD as well, the Laugh n Learn first though. She didn't start really playing or paying attention to Violet until recently when she knows what buttons will lead her to what - she likes her alot now! It might be an age thing.
Compromise and Balance are key. JH.
All of this. I don't have the Laugh and Learn to compare to the Violet/Scout, but it's a really awesome, interactive toy. My kid has been playing with it daily for at least the past 6 months.

We have the Violet dog. Natalie LOVES her. Violet says her name and her favorite animal and color and food etc. There is a song that Violet spells out "Natalie" and that is one of her favorites. If I were you, I would keep Scout. (Or return Scout and get a violet because I think Violet is cuter :P) It is a toy that your little one will really be able to grow with, at least for a few years.
ETA: I go to 2nd hand stores frequently and in every store I have seen at least one, if not more or the L&L puppies. I'm not saying it's a bad toy but I've never seen a Violet or Scout. I think it probably has to do with the personalization factor.
Sold ladies :-) I think we will keep it....seems like it will be more fun as she gets older. I kind of wish we had the purple one, but I'm ok with the green...nice to have it gender neutral in case we have a second kid and it's not another girl!
