How long does it take you to nurse?

How long does it take you to nurse?

It takes me about an hour start to finish for DS2 to nurse. I offer him both sides and pretty much takes both per session. Granted, he is off and on the whole time. Is this a normal amount of time or should I be doing something to fix this? It's so difficult to feed him this long, especially since DS1 19 months is requiring my constant attention at all times ;

  • At just over 5 weeks old, my daughter still takes about an hour total each nursing session. Mostly because of breaks and sometimes she is comfort sucking too. That is until she starts cluster feeding at night. I get maybe an hour to hour and a half break on between sessions. I can't wait for nursing to last only a few minutes a side! When does that happen?

    I can't imagine doing this with another kid around. Sorry, but I know it will get better. It has to!

  • Actual nursing and burping about 20 - 30 min.

  • Sadly it is normal. When DD was less than a month old, I could not believe how long she was on the boob. She is still on a pretty long time. Average of 35 minutes - normally 20 minutes on one boob and 15 on the other. Sometimes as little as 20 and sometimes as much as 45. I always offer the second breast after the first is empty and she takes me up on it 95% of the time.

    Plus side she is a pretty good night sleeper. No idea if it is related.

  • Yep that's pretty normal.  DS is 6 weeks 3 days, and just in the last 3-4 days he's started getting faster.  I'd say it takes around 40 minutes instead of an hour to feed, burb, diaper change, feed other boob.  One night we did it all in 30 minutes, but he was ravenous and exhausted, so he ate fast and then fell asleep after the 1st boob was empty.

    Ha I know! It's sort of like... what's the point of getting out for an hour or two if I then have to find a spot to nurse for an hour. Not very appealing. Until she gets faster (like 20-25 minutes or less), I would rather just bring a pumped bottle for longer trips.

  • It's always been about 15-20 minutes per side so with burping and changing it is about an hour. I've noticed lately she is staying on for closer to 10. I hope this means she is starting to get more efficient.

    I probably couldn't NIP because of all the noises she makes! She's such a monster at the boob.

    I nurse for probably about an hour too.

  • Same here! When she wakes up on her own to eat it sometimes takes closer to 3045 minutes but normally about an hour. The LC said she's a lazy eatershe doesn't suck effectively, she comfort sucks, she falls asleep on the boob, etc.
  • I also have to use both hands since breast compressions help keep her awake!
  • Oh good! It seems like I'm right on track then :. Thanks ladies :

  • At first DD was nursing an hour and a half. It took forever! Now she doesn't about 45 minutes during the day and her MOTN feeding is usually 10 minutes. Except when she is cluster feeding which seems to be every few days. Then she spends three hours in the morning nursing off and on, takes a 3 hour nap (because I won't let her sleep longer) and then nurses for another few hours. But she goes down about 10-11ish and sleeps 4-5 hours and then is up for her snack and then sleeps another 3 so I guess it works for her. Lol.
