Solids Poll

When you feed LO solids, do you feed him or her "meals?" Meaning, do you do a bottle, then solids right after, or solids in between bottle feedings?

Re: Solids Poll

  • I give solids 30 min after she eats.

  • We feed at meal time.  For breakfast and lunch, it typically falls after a bottle anyway.  Dinner does not, but she always takes her last bottle after dinner without any troubles.  I had read to always feed solids after a bottle, but our pedi said it doesn't matter and it just depends on the baby.

  • At daycare she usually has something around 9 or 10 and then a bottle afterwards.  Then at home she has solids when we get home between 5:30-6:30 and then has a bottle 30 minutes or so afterwards.  She is eating more solids now then she was so I wait a little bit for the bottle so she is hungry enough to eat it all.  She ate a lot of peaches the other day and then drank a bottle and spit up peaches soon after she had the bottle.  So I am trying to give her a little time now.

  • Right now I am offering solids about an hour after his last bottle around mealtimes.  Too soon and he's not interested and too close to when his next bottle would be, he would rather have that.

  • I do it in between nursing sessions.  My mom watches DD while I'm at work and she usually does bottle and then solids right after.

  • I keep reading posts like this and then wondering what Im doing wrong.  We are only feeding solids once a day at this point....I work 50-55 hours per week with a hour and a half a day commute, by the time we all get home its a mad house and he gets solids with his meal at night usually before his last bottle.  We are out the door before 7am so no time in the morning.  Daycare hasn't started feeding him solids during the day yet so maybe I should tell them too.  Just wondering if you all are staying at home or have a family member watching LO so thats why you are all able to fit it in??  I feel like there aren't enough hours in the day!  :)

  • I feed them between meals. Right now she gets fruit and oatmeal in the morning when she gets to dc and a veggie when she gets home from dc.

You are not doing anything wrong!! I feel the same way.  Right now DD is eating 2 solids meals a day...one around lunch time (at DC 3 days a week, and with Grandmas 2 days), and then around dinner time when we get home.  In the next month or so, I will probably add in breakfast too.  So maybe have DC offer him some when the "bigger" kids are eating lunch?  DD actually loves sitting at the table with everyone.

I was just so confused because our doc told us to feed solids right after bottles, bc then LO's tummy isn't full around the clock.  She said this should reduce night wakings since she would be used to not being full all the time.  But then all of the mommies I talk to seemed to feed solids in between bottles so LO is hungry for it...it's hard to know what to do!

  • DD eats 2x a day right now.  She wakes up and gets a 7.5oz bottle and immediately follows that bottle with about an ounce and a half of whatever food we are trying that week (this week it has been apples).  She then gets 3  7.5oz bottles at daycare with the last bottle always being between 3:30-4pm.  She then gets 2 tablespoons of oatmeal at 5:30pm immediately followed by a 4oz bottle and then that's it for the night.  She is in bed by 6:30ish.

  • We feed solids right after bottle, so at mealtime. For example, bottle at 7:30 am, solids at 8, all for breakfast. If we spread it out more she refuses the bottle because she's not hungry enough.

Yes, my mom and MIL watch DD.  Whenever I try something new with the routine, I start when I have a long weekend so that DH and I can do the routine for 3-4 days and then tell mom and MIL to do the same.  Thanksgiving might be a good time to add in another meal and see if your daycare is open to that.

  • I give them like an hour after she nurses, but she rarely eats more than a few bites.  We're working on them.
