Re: Best way to wash diapers with the cheap regular washer

  • I have a cheap old washer and dryer too, came with our house.  I do a warm soak/rinse with no detergent then a warm/warm wash with detergent.  If my washer would run hot I'd do that but the hot cycle won't work.  Then I do two extra rinses, usually a warm then a cold.  I have stains but started using a tiny bit of oxyclean in the wash and it's really helped.  Honestly for me, sun didn't help all that much.  You shouldn't have smell.  Try using more detergent and more water and rinsing really really well.  hth!

  • I have a cheapo top loader washer as well. I do a warm express wash, then a hot heavy duty wash with an extra rinse.

I use Tiny Bubbles, and they recommend 2 scoops for top loaders, so that is how much I use. If you don't have a full load yet, add some towels to the load to make up the difference, that way you can use a full water level and the diapers will be able to rub up against the towels which will help them get cleaner.

  • What is considered a full load? We are doing pockets.

  • From what I understand, those of us (me included) with cheapo top loading washers are better off than HE washer owners as far as cloth diaper washing goes. More water for rinsing is better. From what I have learned, always wash with the highes amount of water, in other words, select "large" or "super" load size for more water. I just set it to wash once and, then when done, I wash again.  I use a homemade detergent and seem to do well. Be sure not to use too much or too little detergent as that can cause smell. I was every other day and that seems to work.

I am having trouble updating tickers--But I am due on April 2015. I have 2 older step children: 9 and 14 yrs and I also recently had 2 younger children: 2 years and 1 year... so this means I will be having 3 under 3--and trying to fit our family of 7 into our minivan--eek!

  • The instructions that came with an order from jillians drawers said to wash 12-18 diapers at a time, so I'm assuming a full load is 18, assuming your washer can handle that many.

  • I have a top-loader, and we have hard water too. I use regular old tide original powder, about 1/4 recommended amount. i start with a cold wash, no detergent, followed by HOT wash with detergent. i set my washer to "extra large" load, and usually have about 10-12 diapers in there.
