Baby manicure question

I was told to not clip LO nails so I've been trying to tear them when they are soft from the tub but he doesn't like that. Today I tried to file them which I guess he liked because he fell asleep. Problem is the file isn't very effective. I used a baby file. What kind do you use?

  • I know this sounds weird, but try to nibble them off yourself after lo is out of the bath. My in laws sugguested it and I thought they were crazy until I accidentally cut her little thumb the other day with the baby clippers, she was fine and only cried for a second, but I cried for about 10 minutes because I felt so bad. So I took their advice and after her bath when she fell asleep I nibbled on her little nails and it worked. You don't have to worry about hurting her because if your using your mouth you can feel the difference between her skin and her nail. She slept right through it and now no more super sharp nails or cutting accidents.

  • My clip and file weren't effective either.  I wait for them to start tearing, then I just finish the job.

  • I have little emory boards but I clip DD's nails when she's sleeping. I've heard of glass baby nail files but haven't looked for them.
  • I heard clipping is not good this young because skin is attached and can make then bleed. The Pedi said he's had several moms come in with babies with bleeding fingers. Is that not right? I feel silly asking but FTM here. I'll try nibbling them off after bath time when he falls asleep.

This! I did this with DD and now with DS.

  • Not sure why you would be told not to clip them other than the risk of catching skin not nail. I clip my DDs and it's not too bad as long as she's asleep when I do it :)

  • I use a nail file, just a metal one I bought at Walmart for less than a dollar.  I think I'm going to try clipping or scissors though, because filing doesn't seem to work that well for us.  I hate doing it, and I always manage to leave behind edges so she keeps scratching my boob while she's BFing.  It makes me want to scream to have all these little needle-like pokes to my boobs every five seconds.

This is what I do. I actually never tried the clippers, they make me nervous.

  • I clip them. It works best when DS is quiet active or asleep. I found the best way to avoid cutting his skin is to sit at his head while he lies on his back. I take his hand towards me and very carefully ease the clippers under his nail.
  • My husband does the nail clipping, but he's used the clippers since day one.  I know the pedis and nurses advise new parents to chew or file them, but he's had no issues.  His trick is that he sort of scrape/lifts the nail using the bottom half of the clippers so he makes sure he doesn't get any skin. He actually makes it look really easy :)
