LO's dr. freaked at how big he is

We had LO's 6 month appontment today and he weighed in at almost 25 pounds and 30 inches, which puts him at 100 percentile for a 9 month old. She said if he's growing like this at his next appointment we need to have him checked out to see what's wrong.

Really? Anyone else's dr worried about how big they are?

Re: LO's dr. freaked at how big he is

  • Micah is still a litte pipsqueak, but I know they have those percentiles for a reason. They are there to draw attention to anything out of the ordinary so that if there is a problem, it's addressed as soon as possible. I'm sure your LO is fine, but I would be more concerned if the doctor didn't check in to possible problems. She's just making sure he's the healthy little boy that you know he is!

She did calm down a bit when I told her both my father and brother are 6'2" but I guess it never occurred to me there might be a problem. His length, weight and head circumference are very proportional.

  • My half-brother was really, really, big as a baby (huge family on both sides of 6'6" +! peeps)  They eventually had to treat him him because growing so big, so fast could make him sick/weakened immune system-but not till he was around 4 or 5, I think. I think they just gave him meds. He's a healthy, 35, strappy 6'6" guy now :)

But it takes awhile before they determine that and it was non-invasive. Don't worry- if the doc was worried, they wouldn't wait to see. In the meantime, maybe you'll be able to get more info. Enjoy the big baby boy! That'll be a bragging right when he's older :)

That is BIG baby, but I don't think it is alarming b/c he is proportionate.  What were his birth stats?  Is he FF or BF?

DS was 11 pounds/22 inches at birth, 24 pounds/28inches at 6m, and 26.5 pounds at 7m.  Our doctor is not concerned AT ALL.  He is off the charts for weight and nearly off for height too.

Are you and DH big/tall people?

He was 9 lb, 2.5 oz and 23 inches at birth. He's also technically over 6 and a half months, so he seems to be where your DS is.

I'm 5'6" and DH is 5'9", but we;ve got tall people on both sides of the family. We also have sturdier frames.

  • DH was 26 lbs at 6 months and there was nothing wrong with him, though he did have reflux. He was FF. He ended up being a really skinny teen and is now of average height and weight. I don't know why your dr would be so worried.

  • Personally I think that is quite an overreaction of your doctor. There are a lot of factors that come into play. My LO was 5.8lbs and 18.5" at birth and was 23lbs and 29" at 6.5 months and his pediatrician was absolutely delighted. That's a much bigger growth than your LO has had actually and my LO sees multiple doctors and not a one has ever been anything but overly satisfied.

Also, I'm only 5ft and 115lbs. DH is nearly 6ft and 170lbs. We aren't large people or anything.

  • C weighed 24lbs 3oz and was 29 inches at his 6 month and our pedi said nothing about it. I would not worry. My DH is 6'6 and we both were huge babies as well - I don't know if that matters.

  • Thanks for the reassurance everyone. I know we've had people comment on how big he is, but this is the second visit to this clinic where they've kind of flipped over his size.

It's a very new experience for me. DD was a micropreemie and it took forever for her to catch up, and then when she did she was really chunky but that was because of her high calorie formula. I

t's nice to know he's not the only big baby.

Am I not supposed to be giving him cookies and ice cream at every meal? Wink

Mine hasn't been 13 pounds since his 2 month check-up.

  • Min is 29" and only about 20 pounds. He only gets breast milk via bottle (and some baby food 3x a day). He is a long, thin kid. Daddy is 6'2" and grandpa is 6'4". And to think he was 9lb 2 oz and 19 in when he was born @ 38 weeks!
