Food Allergy

DH got milk on DS

DS is allergic to a few things one of which is dairy. We never did any testing but know bc of early on blood in stool and cutting it out of my diet (I'm BFing) made it stop. I've been dairy free for the past 8 months. Two days ago DH wasn't careful with his milk in his coffee and got some on DS's cheek. It was bright red with tiny bumps that you could feel but not see well. It stayed like that for over 24 hours and is now just fading. Does this mean DS's milk allergy is severe? I was hoping he would outgrow the dairy allergy =(  DH is not careful with DS's foods he is allergic to. How do I get him to take his allergies more seriously? Do exposures to the allergen make it more likely he won't outgrow them?

Thanks for your help!

Re: DH got milk on DS

  • I would take your DS to a pedi allergist for testing. Bring DH with you and ask the allergist about the importance of avoiding exposing DS to his allergens. (If you phrase it that way, I imagine your DH would listen better than if you tell the allergist your DH isn't taking things seriously. Although, I'd be tempted to throw DH under the bus, if it were me!).

Anyway, it is very important to try to minimize exposure to allergens because one reaction could be minor, the next one could be life-threatening, you just never know. It would be helpful to see a pedi allergist so you know for sure what DS is allergic to and so you know how to handle reactions (benadryl/EpiPen).

In the meantime, you might want to send DH links to the FAAN website or maybe read FA stuff in front of DH and point things out to him about how life-threatening FA's can be. There are also lots of youtube videos of people talking about their kids' reactions to FA's.

  • whenever your doing any testing for allergies; they start with the skin first. if it gets red, rashy, and has hives, they are allergic to the substance. I definitely wouldn't give her a bottle of milk in the near future though. Get it monitored and make sure you see an allergist. If they don't outgrow it by ages 3-5, she'll most likely be allergic to it for the rest of her life.
