Baby Monitor Questions for Kids Over 2

Hi Ladies!  We are expecting baby #2 next month and I'm trying to decide if we need to fork out the money to buy a digital baby monitor with 2 cameras.  We have one for my daughter who is almost 2, but now with baby #2 coming, we need another one.

I was curious to hear how long you used one with your toddler to help me justify the $250 investment.  Unfortunately, our master is on the main and the kids are upstairs, so I feel like I need to have an "eye" on them at all times.  Thanks for your help!

Re: Baby Monitor Questions for Kids Over 2

  • My toddler is 2.5 and I use the monitor ALL the time. Since she is no longer in her crib, she likes to party and tear up her room when she doesn't want to sleep. I need to keep an eye on what havoc she is causing and I like to know when she actually goes to sleep. We will also be purchasing another monitor or a new system with 2 monitors.

  • We are on a different floor as the kids and I still use mine with a 4.5 year old.  He is sick and I would not have slept without it.  He was up a few times last night because he spiked a high fever and it took awhile for the motrin to kick in.

  • This.  We will be using his old monitor for DD.

We dont use a monitor with DS.  He is on the same floor as us, and if he cries we will hear him.

  • we can see DD from our bedroom, we have a small house so haven't used the monitor since she was a baby.

  • I was going to say you don't need a monitor, but since you are on different floors, I would get one.  I wouldn't however, spend $250 on one, even a video one.  I just don't think their necessary.  I'd just get a regular one so you can hear them.

  • I have the $100 from amazon - can't remember the exact name of it now, but it got excellent review and I LOVE it. It's a video monitor, and additional cameras are like $60? I bought an extra one for when we have #2 eventually.

Only thing it doesn't do is scan between cameras, you have to do that manually on the monitor. But I love being able to see what she's doing up there - whether I need to go in or not. Worth every cent!

  • I think the location of their bedroom to yours plays a factor.  Our kids are on the opposite side of the house and we wouldn't necessarily hear them so we still use them (ds turned 2 in Oct. and dd turned 1 in Sept.).
  • DD is 2.5 and we use one because we live in a big house. However, the monitor we have is a 21 y/o monitor from when her sisters were babies and that is all we have ever used. Nothing fancy but it does the trick. I just need to hear her, no need to see her. I would just get some cheap regular monitor and not waste your money on a fancy video monitor.

  • My DS is 3 and in a bed, and we still use the monitor. I can't always hear him with the way our duct work is (heat or AC running) and I like the video feature, so I can tell if he is just making noise in his sleep or if he needs me--though he now will come to me, if truly upset.

That being said, if you want to upgrade, getting a baby monitor with 2 cameras isn't a bad investment. I'd feel the same way and want to have the video monitor in both kids' rooms.

Perhaps wait it out a bit until after baby #2 arrives. Someone may give a gift? I know in my family, even with 2nd (or more) children, we give gifts, often monetary. And you can always decide then if you want the monitor. No need to buy immediately.

  • We've never used a monitor with a camera. Since DD2 is still in her crib, we use the monitor for naps, although I think I could still hear her without it. We stopped using it with DD1 when we switched her to a twin bed because she always just came to find us if he woke up. She was never one to get into trouble though...

  • We don't use monitors because we're all on the same floor and I just sleep with my door open. I would not spend the money on an expensive monitor, but instead opt for a basic one. You need to hear your kid if they cry, anything else seems excessive to me.

  • When we had DD, we just moved the monitor from DS room to hers.  He was 2 yrs and 2 months.  He is far enough away that we can't hear him, but he's in a bed, so if needs anything, he just comes to our room.  If he was upstairs, I would probably have purchased a second monitor, because he's not that great with steps yet, and I wouldn't want him coming down by himself.

  • We use a video monitor for both kiddos and I love it! I almost didn't buy the 2nd camera but so glad I did. We are on the same floor as the boys but way down the hall. I like being able to see when my toddler is awake and making sure he's in bed.

I didn't have the video monitor when DS1 was little but I love having it now for DS2. Babies make so many noises in their sleep that I love being able to see when he is really awake, and I can see his little chest move when he breathes. :]

    It's probably this one $99 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0052QYLUM/ref=oh_details_o01_s01_i00

I got the same one. I could not bring myself to spend $250, so I bought this one based on the reviews. I would make the same decision again. No, it doesn't scan between the rooms, but since my kids rooms are across the hall from each other (we are upstairs) I leave the monitor on the baby, and if my toddler gets up and goes to the gate to yell for us, the monitor in her room will pick up that sound.
