Hi ladies! I currently live in Houston, TX and delivered DD here with a midwife in a hospital. There is a possibility that we will be moving to the Pittsburgh area one month before my due date, and I was wondering if any of you knew of any midwives that delivered in a hospital there. TIA!
Re: Anyone deliver with a midwife in the Pittsburgh area?
There are lots of midwives up here! I'm delivering at a standalone birth center called The Midwife Center in Pittsburgh, but they do have hospital privileges at UPMC Mercy hospital if you'd prefer a hospital natural birth. Magee-Women's Hospital of UPMC also has Midwives at Magee. Check with your insurance company to see which providers are covered! Personally I did not have a good birthing experience at Magee (some people love that hospital some hate it) but I LOVE my midwives at TMC and the L&D staff at Mercy are so nice. I know there are MWs that offer homebirthing options but I didn't pursue that option personally. I'm pretty sure West Penn Allegheny Health System has MWs too, but I do not know if they have hospital privileges since I was only interested in a BC birth and there's only one standalone BC in Pgh. Good luck in your research and welcome to Pittsburgh
P.S. If you're interested visit www.midwifecenter.org they are amazing and are well-respected at Mercy
I'm also using the Midwife Center (the freestanding center on Penn Ave). As pp mentioned, there is also the Midwives at Magee that are supposed to be great as well.
Interesting to note though, we were covering interventions in my birthing class last weekend (which is made up of us and 2 couples delivering with the Midwives at Magee) and most of the things we were discussing our instructor was mostly focused on talking to the other two couples about (like eating during labor, having a saline/hep lock, etc.) then would turn to us and say, "you of course don't have to worry about this unless you get transferred to Mercy". Basically, the Midwives at Magee still do births in a hospital (same L&D floor as regular OB patients) so you have to go through all of the same "hospital procedures/policies" as other patients or have to worry more about if they'll allow certain things on your birth plan. They are definitely more flexible about these things than if you went through their regular unit, but I find it much less stressful to not have to even worry about it.
I will say, you might want to give either one a call and see if they are still taking patients with your due date. I know the TMC tends to fill up pretty fast.
