Pregnant after a Loss

First Tri Weigh Gain?

Hey Y'all-

First off, LOVE seeing all the pics of baby bumps! Too cute!

But, it got me thinking. I've been sooo hungry this week and I can't tell if its all in my head or if I'm actually hungrier bc of the pregnancy. I'm almost 5 weeks, so I feel like this must all be in my head. Anyway, how many of y'all actually felt hungrier so soon after your BFP?? And I've heard you don't actually need to gain any weight in the first tri, is that true? I'm planning to ask my OBGYN, but I don't get to see her til after thanksgiving (I have a pretty strong relationship with the lab tech though haha)!

Re: First Tri Weigh Gain?

  • Since early in my pregnancy I go through phases where I am starving all the time and phases where I have to remind myself to eat.

Everyone gains weight differently.  Personally I gained less than a pound in first tri, other women loss weight and some gain quite a bit of weight.  If you are concerned about weight gain, ask your OB for his or her recommendation for your body.

  • I don't think I started gaining wait unit after 15 weeks.  I believe I actually lost weight during first tri, mostly because I could not keep much down.

  • I was very sick for the first 15 weeks or so and ended up losing 18lbs. Mine was pretty extreme but I did lose about 5lbs at the begining of my last pregnancy as well. Some women find that eating more during the first trimester is the only way to keep their nausea at bay, I personally couldn't keep anything down. Others gain weight because they are less active or not worrying about what they eat as much now that they are pregnant. As long as you are eating healthy food and eating when you are hungry I wouldn't worry about gaining too much. If your eating a snickers bar and going to Five Guys for a burger every day like my friend did with her pregnancy you are probably going to gain quite a bit more that will stick around long after baby is born.
  • I felt like I needed to eat more often during the first trimester... It was to the point where I would wake up STARVING in the middle of the night...

This! I was always, always, always hungry. I'd wake up at 3 in the morning with a burning stomach, and I'd have to have a yogurt or something. I tried to make healthy choices, but I still gained 11 pounds in my first trimester. My appetite returned to normal around week 15 or so, and I'm hoping the weight gain slows down.

It was a rough road, but Arlo Daniel was born April 1, 2013—and our second rainbow is due October 12, 2014.
  • I was definitely hungrier early on in my pregnancy. I'm not sure if ate more overall or just more often. I think it is normal to gain up to 5 lbs or so in the first tri. I gained about 2.

haha! I made this mistake with my first pregnancy, but never again!! It took me two years to lose the baby weight, even with EBF! haha

    Thanks everyone for y'all's input!

  • I have pretty much been constantly starving since about 4 weeks. I feel like I'm eating a lot, but I've only put on a couple pounds, so I'm not too worried about it. I think maybe I'm just eating more frequently but smaller amounts? Hard to tell.

I say listen to your body. If you feel hungry, you probably are, so eat. Just try to make healthy choices, and also drink lots of water. As others have said, as long as you aren't looking at pregnancy as a green light to overindulge in fatty, high-calorie foods, you'll be fine. Your body will gain as much weight as it needs.

    Just keep swimming.
  • Within a week of my BFP (which was 3 days early) I was HUNGRY. Granted there were triplets in there, but I couldn't eat enough. After the m/s settled in I *had* to eat every couple of hours or I'd get sick. Even carrying triplets (now only twins) I haven't gained any weight just coming into the 2nd trimester. I wasn't trying to aiming for that it just happened that way.

Each woman is different, just as every pregnancy will be different. Your "desired" weight gain during pregnancy will vary based on your PrePg weight. If you're overweight you certainly want to do your best to keep things on the lighter side. If you're like my neighbor and slightly underweight your OB may tell you to fatten up.

Stick to healthy options like fruits and veggies and wash them really good before you eat them since they can be just as dangerous to eat as raw meat if unclean. Protein will fill you up faster, but really in your first trimester, eat what you can. I had days where all I could stomach was soup. I ate a lot of soup...
